Windows Mobile devices come "locked" for exclusive use with the cell carrier that issues them. This programming makes it impossible to insert a SIM card from a different carrier and make a call. However, with an unlock code, the device may be unlocked for use on any supported network. Some carriers are willing to give you the code if you have completed the terms of your contract, others may sell the code for a fee. Unfortunately, many carriers do not provide the code because it allows customers to leave their service. Dozens of online companies specialize in unlock codes.
Instructions
1. Type *#06# to display your device's IMEI number. This unique, 15-digit code is required to generate the unlock code.
2. Call your cell carrier's customer service department to request the unlock code. Some carriers willingly give out this information while others need some convincing. Try saying that you simply wish to use the phone overseas during a vacation. Try two or three times; some operators are more helpful than others.
3. Visit a website that specializes in unlock codes (see Resources).
4. Search its database for the availability of unlock codes for your device. Newer devices may be difficult to find and some may require additional hardware and/or software to unlock. In general, a simple unlock code will suffice.
5. Fill in the order form with your IMEI and other details. The unlock code is sent via email after a specified delivery time. Codes for some devices may take as long as two weeks for delivery.
6. Wait for the code to arrive and read the email for device specific instructions. The instructions may vary greatly from one device to another.
7. Follow the instructions to enter the unlock code. In many cases this involves replacing the original SIM card with one from another carrier and entering the code. In other cases the original SIM card is used and the code is entered on a special menu. Sometimes additional numbers and symbols are combined with the code to complete the process.
