Multimedia cards
are a type of storage device, while an ExpressCard is a type of add-in technology. Smart cards are types of cards that are used to store and transfer data. All three card types have unique features and benefits that set them apart from each other.
Multimedia Card
Multimedia cards are mini memory cards that use flash memory. Flash memory is a type of random access memory and has the capability to be erased and reprogrammed at any time. Multimedia cards are used in a wide array of portable devices, including cellular telephones, e-books, PDAs, digital cameras, personal computers, music players and video camcorders.
ExpressCard
ExpressCards are designed to support a universal slot that allows two module types (ExpressCard 34 and ExpressCard 54) to function together. ExpressCards implement their add-in technology for two different input/output protocol types, USB and PCI Express.
Smart Card
Smart cards are cards that can store information to be transferred at a later time (from themselves to other devices, like card readers). A good example of a smart card is an employee badge. The badge is used to store information about an employee and can be used for tasks like swiping in and out of work (keeping track of the time she worked).
