Garmin, one of North America's leading manufacturers of global positioning system devices, markets its Nüvi 650 as a budget-friendly model intended for automobile use. It sports a built-in MP3 player, voice navigation and a wide touchscreen. You can back up data such as maps and custom route information for safekeeping in case the GPS malfunctions.
Instructions
1. Insert the SD flash card into the appropriate slot on the top of the Nüvi 650.
2. Connect the Nüvi 650 to your computer with the mini-USB cable. Plug the mini-USB end into the port on the side of the GPS and the standard end of the cable into a USB port on your computer.
3. Create a folder on your computer to hold the GPS data by right-clicking on the Desktop and selecting "New Folder" in the context menu. Name the folder "GPS Backup." Open the folder.
4. Open "My Computer" on a Windows PC to access the icon for the Garmin Nüvi. On a Mac, the Garmin device appears as a removable drive on your desktop. Double-click the icon to access its contents.
5. Select all the contents of the Garmin folder with your mouse--including files such as GMAPPROM.unl, the Nüvi's general system-data file; and Voice, the voice-navigation system's data file. Drag the contents to the folder you created in Step 3, copying the files to your computer.
