Camera flash
Even in daylight, many photographers prefer to use an external flash when taking pictures. The flash typically attaches to the camera's hot shoe, but that's not always best method for getting the best light. You may want to take your flash off the camera and using a handle position it.
Instructions
1. Buy an off-camera flash sync cord (OC-E3) or wireless transmitter (Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2) from a reputable dealer. This allows you to control the flash as if it were directly connected to the camera. Many different transmitters are available for the Canon 580EX.
2. Buy a flash bracket from a reputable dealer. The Stratos flash bracket or the B-Series flash bracket from Really Right Stuff are very popular with many professional and advanced amateur photographers.
3. Screw the flash bracket to the camera according to the manufacturer's directions. Most typically will use the tripod mount at the bottom of the camera to attach to the camera.
4. Attach the off-camera flash sync cord or the wireless transmitter to the hot shoe on the camera. This enables the flash's electronic controls to be used with the camera.
5. Attach the off-camera flash sync cord to the flash or set the wireless transmitter controls on the flash so that it will sync with the wireless transmitter. Program the flash to the settings you need based on the picture you're shooting.
6. Turn the camera on and the flash.
