Use A Flash Sd Card Drive

Kodak brand secure digital card

Secure digital (SD) cards are popular storage devices for many peripheral devices, such as digital cameras. However, the cards can be used as portable memory for saving any type of digital data from any program. With the variety of SD card manufacturers and increase in their memory capacity, they are a sturdy and relatively inexpensive way to store and transport data. This article will explain use a secure digital card.

Instructions

Format the SD Card

1. Insert the secure digital card into the appropriate slot on a multi-card reader. Because there are several slots, be sure you use the right one for your card. While newer computers come with a multi-card reader, internal and external readers can be purchased inexpensively (see the Newegg link below).

2. Right-click once on the Windows "Start" button.

3. Click once on the "Explore" option.

4. Find the SD card in the "Folders" section of the window. Depending on the type of secure digital card you have, it may be listed by the brand name or just "Removable Memory." In the example, a Kodak brand SD card is used and shows up as "Kodak."

5. Right-click once on the SD card icon.

6. Click once on the "Format" option.

7. Change any of the formatting options using the drop-down menus on the "Format" window. While it is recommended to use the default settings, the decision is up to the user based on her particular need. A quick format can be completed by clicking once on the "Quick Format" box, but using this option means that the secure digital card will only be formatted and not checked for sectors that are not usable. If you make any unwanted changes, click once on "restore device defaults" to revert back to the original settings.

8. Click once on the "Start" button on the "Format" window when you're ready to begin formatting the SD card.

9. Click once on the "Yes" button to proceed from the pop-up warning window. Be certain that there is no data on the disk that you don't want to lose.

10. Click once on the "OK" button on the pop-up window alerting you that the formatting process has been completed.

11. Click once on the "Close" button to complete the process.

Save Data to the SD Card

12. Insert the secure digital card into the appropriate slot on a multi-card reader.

13. Open the document you want to save to the SD card.

14. Click once on the "File" menu and select "Save As."

15. Select the secure digital card from the "Save in" drop-down menu.

16. Click once on the "Save" button. The data is now saved to the SD card.
