One of Nikon's high-end digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, the D80 is a professional product designed for a wide range of uses. Although photographers typically use flash in low-light situations, flash can also be used for other purposes---for example, to call extra attention to a close object in a shot with a large depth of field. No matter your circumstance, using the flash on your Nikon D80 will require only a few simple steps.
Instructions
1. Insert your SecureDigital (SD) memory card into your Nikon D80's memory slot and turn the camera on. As the D80 lacks internal storage, you will not be able to take photos---flash or otherwise---without your memory card inserted.
2. Shoot on "Auto" mode in low-light settings to use the flash automatically. To test this, turn the "Settings" dial of your camera to "Auto"---denoted by a green "Camera" icon and the word "Auto"---and go into a dark room in your house, such as the bathroom. Press the shutter release button to take a photo, which will cause your flash to go off.
3. Use the flash on any manual mode by pressing the "Flash" button. The "Flash" button is located on the left side of your D80, just behind the lens assembly, and is denoted by an icon that looks like a lightning bolt. Press this button while your camera is set in any mode, and then take a photo to use the flash.
4. Adjust your flash's brightness by setting it to "Manual" and choosing a brightness level. Press the "Menu" button to the side of your LCD screen, tab down to the "Shooting" menu (denoted by a "Camera") icon and scroll until you reach the "Built-in Flash" option. Press the "OK" button, scroll down to "Manual" and press the "OK" button again. Choose from among the flash intensity options, which are "Full," "1/2," "1/4," "1/8," "1/16" or "1/32."
