Sound Clear In A Microphone

Sound Clear in a Microphone

Most people think that they know use a microphone: hold it up to your mouth and talk. However, sounding clear on a microphone isn't that easy. This article will teach you speak or sing clearly through a microphone and avoid feedback and other problems often encountered when using a mic.

Instructions

1. Use a microphone designed for vocal use. Mics designed for instruments or other uses won't convey the tones of your voice properly.

2. Point the microphone directly at your mouth. Sound comes out of your mouth in a straight line, so putting the mic directly in this line will help it pick up every sound you make.

3. Speak directly into the mic. Microphone experts Christopher & Jean Rath note that "some vocalists [....] have been coached to sing across the top of the mic;" this "results in a thin, weak sound being captured by the mic."

4. Hold the mic at its bottom or put it on a mic stand. Holding the mic at the top or covering part of the mic with your hand distorts and muffles the sound.

5. Keep the mic pointed at yourself at all times. Never point a mic at a speaker or other device---it can cause feedback.

6. Speak or sing clearly and enunciate each sound. Use your whole voice. If your voice is raspy or weak, the microphone will project it as raspy or weak.

7. Do a sound check before any performance or speaking begins. Ask someone to stand out in the audience while you test the mic and make sure he can hear you clearly.
