Export An Slr Camera

Shipping an SLR camera overseas requires adequate packaging and careful handling.

Shipping a camera overseas is done for a variety of reasons -- perhaps a South American photographer won a vintage single lens reflex (SLR) from your collection in an online auction or a highly regarded technician in Germany is the only individual you trust to perform maintenance on your expensive digital SLR. No matter the intended destination, a camera must be securely packaged to avoid any damage while in transit. With the right materials and a bit of help from your favorite parcel service, your camera will be en route in no time.

Instructions

1. Remove the lens from the camera by pressing the small release tab near the mount thread and turning it counterclockwise. If you still own them, place both caps over the front and rear lens elements. Place the body cap over the mount threads.

2. Remove any straps or accessories (cable release, flash, hand grip) from the camera body. Set these aside for now. Also remove the batteries from the camera if necessary.

3. Wrap the lens in a layer of bubble wrap at least an inch in thickness. Do the same for the camera body, increasing the layer to about two inches in thickness.

4. Place the straps and other accessories in a plastic bag and wrap it with a thin layer of bubble wrap. If you will be shipping fresh batteries with the camera, include them in the bag.

5. Place the wrapped lens, camera body and accessory bag into a shipping box of the appropriate size. Fill the box with Styrofoam packing peanuts, ensuring that any space between the items is filled. Close the lid and secure it with packing tape.

6. Take the package to the parcel service of your choice. Create a shipping label containing the valid shipping address as well as a return label with your address on it.

7. Pay the required international shipping fee and leave the package with the parcel clerk. You will receive a receipt along with an estimated delivery date.
