Connect A Vhs Camera To An Apple Computer

Transfer memories stored on VHS tapes to digital format using your Mac computer.

Many people have captured treasured memories on video in older formats such as VHS. New digital technology makes sharing those memories much easier than ever. Even people who have older VHS cameras still in good condition can store those captured moments digitally as well. Transfer those memories stored on VHS format easily on an Apple computer with the right equipment. To do so, however, you must be able to connect your camera or VCR to your Mac.

Instructions

1. The USB connector is a flat, rectangular tip that contains four pins that look like nodules on the raised insert.

Connect the USB end of the USB capture device to your Mac’s USB 2.0 port. The USB of the connection device is a flattened rectangular tip marked by a trident with four "pins," or raised nodules, on an inner block. The USB 2.0 port is a rectangular port on the side of Mac notebook computers marked by the same trident as on the plug. Insert the connection tip into the USB 2.0 port so that the pins on the tip match the pins inside the port. Note: The trident on the tip will face up when correctly inserted into the port.

FireWire works at much higher speeds than the USB 2.0. FireWire ports on newer Mac computers feature the 9-pin FireWire 800, which operates at much higher speeds than the previous FireWire 400. FireWire tips and ports are more squared than the USB 2.0, although the smaller ports have a rounded end, while the new port is nearly square. Connect the FireWire tip into the port by matching the shape, if it's the smaller ports; or the pin count (five on top/four on bottom) if it's a FireWire 800. The symbol for FireWire looks like a "Y" composed of a circle surrounded by three triangular blocks, two of which are split. The FireWire port on the Mac is marked in that manner. Insert the FireWire tip into the port on the Mac.

2. The RCA audio/video tips match the color-coded ports on the video camera or VCR.

Connect the converter cable to the video camera or VCR using the RCA input/output ports for video and audio. The RCA input-output plugs feature a male connector surrounded by a circular ring. The yellow plug is for composite video, while the red and white plugs are for stereo audio. Insert the connection tips to the matching-colored sockets on the VCR or video camera until the tips fit snugly.

3. Turn on the VHS video camera or the VCR to begin capturing video in your Apple computer. You must have the video software open to work with video and audio.
