Proper Sequence For Car Tire Rotation

tire

Tire rotation helps your tires wear more evenly and can improve the handling of your vehicle. To get the benefits, you must rotate the tires in the right pattern for your type of vehicle and type of tires.

Rearward Cross

The rearward cross is for rear wheel drive and 4-wheel drive vehicles. The rear tires are moved directly forward, staying on the same side of the vehicle. The front tires are moved to the back, and to the opposite side of the vehicle. So, the rear driver side tire would move to the front driver side and the front driver side tire would be moved to the rear passenger side

Forward Cross

The forward cross is used for front wheel drive vehicles. It is the opposite of the rearward cross. The front tires go directly to the rear and the rear tires crisscross to the front.

X-Pattern

The X-pattern can be used in front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4-wheel drive vehicles. It is exactly what the name implies. The front driver side tire is swapped with the rear passenger side tire and the front passenger side tire is swapped with the rear driver side tire.

Directional Tires

Some newer tire designs are directional tires. They can be swapped front and back, but never from side to side.
