Make A Slide Viewer

You can build a light table slide viewr.

Slide viewers are used by photographers and individuals to preview slides to either arrange into catalogs or a filing system, or to preview before including in a presentation. Commercially produced slide viewers can be expensive to purchase. However, with some time, effort and materials from your local hardware and craft-supply store, you can easily make one at home that will do the job the same way.

Instructions

1. Choose a case that is about 5 to 6 inches in depth. A display or shadow box will be a good decision; pick one that is 11 by 14 or 16 by 20 inches in size. You can use a larger or smaller size for your slide view, depending on the amount of space you have to use it in.

2. Affix the small fluorescent light fixture inside the shadow box, in the middle of the back of the box. Cut an opening that will be large enough for the plug from the light fixture to go through. You can use contact cement, finishing screws or small nuts and bolts to secure the light fixture in place. If you use the nuts and bolts, be sure to cover the part of nut that is attached on the outside of the box, so it will not damage any furniture it rests on.

3. Replace the glass in the display or shadow box with the translucent Plexiglas or plastic. This type of material will diffuse the light across the viewing surface, and is also less likely to break the same way glass might if you put pressure on it.

4. Plug the light in, turn it on and you are ready to start viewing slides.
