Restore A Zune

The Zune MP3 player has quite a simple interface. So simple, in fact, that if something goes wrong and you need to wipe your Zune, or restore lost data, you may find yourself at a loss for what to do. There are a few non-destructive steps to try, but if nothing works, use the secret reset button combination to start totally fresh.

Instructions

Update Software

1. Connect the Zune to your computer and let the Zune software start.

2. Click "Settings" at the top right of the screen, then "Device."

3. Click "Player Update" to make sure your player's software is up to date. If it isn't, update the software.

4. Click "Software" at the top of the screen, then "General" at the left.

5. Click "Check for updates" under "Software." Apply any available updates.

6. Reboot the Zune by disconnecting it from your computer, then pressing and holding the "Back" button and a moment later pressing and holding the "Up" button (the top of the large central pad). If the Zune works normally after this, sync the Zune to restore all content, then stop here.

7. Force the Zune software to start fresh with your Zune by "forgetting" the player. Click "Settings," then "Device."

8. Click "Forget this player," under "Sync Options." Confirm by clicking "OK."

9. Reboot the Zune as in step 6. If the Zune works normally after this, sync the Zune to restore all content, then stop here.

Reformat

10. Erase the Zune's drive by reformatting it: Reboot the Zune as in the first section, step 6. When the screen goes blank, release the buttons you were holding and hold down all three buttons: Back, the pad center, and Play.

11. Wait for the player to delete all its content.

12. Connect the Zune to your PC when the on-screen directions tell you to.

13. Repeat Section 1.
