A TV remote control relies on the keypad membrane to activate the functions of the electronic circuits inside the case. Dust and other environmental gunk that gets into the remote will foul the membrane and cause it to function erratically. To repair the TV remote, clean the membrane. You must partially disassemble the remote, but none of the electronic components will require any type of alteration. A few household supplies all that is needed.
Instructions
1. Place a bath towel on a table. Place the TV remote face down on the towel. Pull off the battery lid. Remove the batteries from the compartment. Turn the remote over.
2. Place the tip of a guitar pick into the seam at the lower left corner between the top and bottom case. Move the tip of the guitar pick across the width of the bottom until you reach the lower right corner. Repeat this procedure at the top of the remote, starting at the upper left corner.
3. Place the tip of the pick into the seam at the upper left corner between the top and bottom case. Move the tip of the pick down the length of the remote until you reach the bottom. Repeat this procedure on the right side of the remote, only starting in the seam at the upper right corner.
4. Pull the top case off the bottom case. Place the top case aside. Remove the keypad membrane from inside the bottom case.
5. Scrape the edge of a rubber eraser against any dirt or gunk that you see on either side of the membrane. Stop scraping when it is gone. Blow off the membrane with a burst of compressed air.
6. Pour a half gallon of tap water into a plastic container. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Stir with a spoon.
7. Place the keypad membrane into the water. Agitate the membrane to saturate it. Rub your fingers against the membrane on both sides within the water.
8. Remove the membrane from the water. Dry with a paper towel. Let the membrane dry for a day.
9. Place the membrane back into the bottom shell of the remote in its original position.
10. Place the top shell back on the bottom shell. Push down on the corners of the top shell to secure it to the bottom shell.
11. Turn the remote over. Place the batteries back into the remote. Place the battery lid back on.
