A rear diffuser is a tool used by photographers and film makers to soften direct light from a lighting source. Diffusers are made of thin plastic material or white fabric. When they are placed in front of a light source, they scatter the light in many directions. Instead of light hitting the subject directly, it comes from many different angles and appears softer. Rear diffusers are used specifically for backlighting a scene. The light comes from behind and gives the subject a shadowy appearance. Homemade light diffusers are simple to make.
Instructions
1. Remove the back from the frame so only the hollow rim remains.
2. Wrap two 6-foot wires around one long side of the frame spaced evenly from the corners. Make sure the the wrapping is secure. Only use about six inches of wire to wrap. Leave the rest hanging.
3. Wrap a 4-foot wire on the opposite side of the frame. Position it in the center and use about six inches to wrap.
4. Cut a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than the frame.
5. Position it on top of the frame and staple the edges to the frame. Use enough staples so the fabric is taught and doesn't droop. Trim the edges that hang off the sides of the frame.
6. Hang the frame by the two wires from the ceiling. Wrap the other wire around the light frame to angle it how you desire.
