Take A Family Photo

Family photos can be appreciated and shared through generations.

Nothing preserves memories like a photograph. Family photographs can be treasured keepsakes and passed down through the generations. Portraits can be composed as the occasion demands; formal settings are nice, but so are fun get-togethers at the beach. Digital cameras make it easy to capture your family at dinners, holidays or on vacation. A good quality camera and the right composition of the family can go a long way in creating cherished moments that can grace your home and hearts.

Instructions

1. Compose the group, so they are close together in the photo. Physical closeness in a photograph emits warmth and imparts a tone of togetherness. Position people, so they stand close at slight angles and overlapping shoulders. Place tallest people in the back and shorter in the front. Sit elderly family members in chairs if they are uncomfortable standing.

2. Coordinate clothing, so the colors are in the same palette as each other or are close in hue. Wear matching colors if that is acceptable to the family members, but stay away from identical, matching attire. Wear simple clothing without loud logos, stripes or prints, so the focus remains on the face. Photographs will look more professional if the clothing is not a distraction.

3. Don't blink. Make sure everyone's eyes are open. Scan across everyone's face to make sure no one is winking, blinking or yawning before you squeeze the shutter button.

4. Create genuine smiles by getting the family to do something they normally wouldn't when posing for a photo, such as jumping in the air, climbing on top of each other, dancing or standing in a creative pose. Crack some jokes, so everyone laughs.

5. Create candid shots by having your family members talking to each other or hugging or conveying affection. Not every photograph needs to be a static shot with subjects facing the camera.

6. Put yourself in the photograph. Visualize your place in the group setting and leave a space for yourself. Place your camera on a tripod, compose the photo, set the timer and then move quickly to get into the frame.
