Repair A Camera

Knowing troubleshoot can help you solve many camera problems at home.

Most of today's cameras, due to the mechanics of digital photography, tend to be problem-free. In fact, many of the problems that occur with modern cameras tend to be caused more by human error rather than camera error. However, understanding troubleshoot can help you quickly solve many problems that otherwise would require a camera repair shop.

Instructions

Fixing the Camera

1. Locate the manual for your camera model. If the original copy has been lost, go online to find and download an electronic copy of the manual from your camera's manufacturer. Find the troubleshooting section of the manual. Use the options as a checklist. Review each one to make sure the issue doesn't apply to your problem or that you've already tried the listed solution.

2. Examine the lens if the camera is producing poor images. Use a smooth, glass polishing cloth to clean the lens and wipe off any smudging. If the lens is scratched and removable, replace it.

3. If the camera won't turn on, check the power source. Open the camera's battery container and remove the batteries. Test them with a battery tester and throw them away if they don't show full strength. Recharge the battery if the camera uses a reusable battery source. Replace the batteries and try to turn the camera on again.

4. If the camera was submerged in or exposed to fresh water, allow it to dry out for a full day and night. Remove the memory card and batteries to allow those cavities to dry out as well. Reinsert the card and new batteries and test the camera by turning it on.

If the camera was submerged in saltwater, remove the batteries and memory card. Put it in a bag of freshwater immediately, then throw away the batteries and let the card dry out. Take the camera in the bag of water to a professional repairman to clean out the salt. Try to salvage data off the card once it dries.

5. If the camera won't connect or load images to your computer, replace the camera software on your computer with a new version and installation. Uninstall your current software. Download the new version, execute the installation process, and finalize the software licensing. Connect the camera to the computer with a data cable and try to download the images again.

6. If the camera shows an error message and won't respond to any controls, turn the camera off and wait at least ten seconds. Wait for the screen to go blank and then restart the camera. Allow it to go through the startup process. Test the camera by taking a photo and confirming it captures images correctly.
