Xbox Light Tutorial

Many Microsoft Xbox 360 users have experienced a multitude of flashing lights around the power button when turning the system on, loading a game or even during game play. Different light signals signify different errors, some easily fixable from home and some requiring the Microsoft Xbox 360 to be sent to the makers or other repair options.

Problems

There are eight common errors that flashing lights around the power button describe:

1. Flashing red and green for a FRAG error

2. Solid green light with no video, audio and/or unable to eject for a system BIOS error

3. Solid green light with no video or audio; however, the eject button does work for a malfunctioning high-definition pack or disconnected AV cables

4. Orange and green flashing light due to a broken or disconnected AV package

5. Orange-only flashing light due to soldering problems

6. Orange and red flashing for memory errors, or lifted the pin5 trace on the motherboard while adding a modification chip

7. Solid red light, also known as the "Red Ring of Death," which usually means overheating of the system. If the solid red light continues, it usually means a hardware malfunction.

8. Green flashing light signifying a poor EPROM image

Solutions

The solutions to each of these problems are different, and the easiest way to guarantee that they are fixed is to send the Microsoft Xbox back to the manufacturer.

The flashing red and green FRAG error, the orange flashing light and the orange/red flashing light are all fixable by checking to make sure no soldering was left on the motherboard due to a mod chip being inserted. Microsoft may not fix the Xbox 360 for free if a modification chip has been inserted in the system.

The remaining errors can be fixed by checking that the AV wires and packages are connected properly. If the problem continues, replace the AV wires and packages.

Any other problems require that you send the Xbox to the manufacturer to replace components. This should be free if you are still within warranty. As always, keep the receipt of electronic purchases so that you can return or exchange them, since this is the easiest method to rectify the problem.
