Secure Surveillance Cameras

Security systems on Internet-connected networks are never completely secure.

Surveillance systems are essential to the security of businesses and homes. Unfortunately, these systems can sometimes be harnessed by criminals to spy on those who they were intended to protect. Properly securing these systems is a give-and-take process, and there different models for surveillance security. However, you must be prepared to sacrifice usability if you want your system safe from all external threats. Remember wireless networks are never completely secure.

Instructions

1. Install a separate router from the one you use for your Internet connection. Do not connect this router to the Internet in any way. This will be the hub for your secure surveillance system.

2. Hook a computer to your router, and enter the router set-up menu. This is usually accomplished by opening a web browser and typing 192.168.1.1 into your address bar.

3. Set a new Service Set Identifier (SSID) for your router, through your router's set-up menu, and save it in a text document. Now, through set-up, disable SSID broadcast. This will stop your router from broadcasting its name, which stops anyone from connecting to it without first knowing its name.

4. Connect all of your cameras to your router. Some cameras have wireless capability, and some will need to be connected via wire. Refer to your cameras' manuals for connection information specific for the model you are using.

5. Connect a desktop computer to your router, via a wire if possible. You can now use your preferred surveillance software to monitor and record video feeds with zero risk of online intrusion, and greatly reduced risk of local intrusion.
