Digital cameras
can be broken down into two main categories. Amateur photographers prefer point-and-shoot digital cameras, while professional photographers tend to purchase digital SLR cameras, or DSLR for short. These cameras are usually larger and have advanced features and customizable options that cater to advanced photography. There is a lot about a DSLR camera that puts it in an elite league of its own.
Function
A DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex. The single lens reflex is the main mechanism that allows for advanced features over standard point-and-shoot cameras. A mirror is set up in front of the film sensor to show the camera's view inside of the viewfinder. When the shutter is clicked, the mirror flips up, the image sensor is exposed and an image is captured.
Benefits
DSLR cameras provide many benefits for photographers. The focus options allow for exact photo specifications, and photographers can even use manual focus by turning the front of a lens, a feature not included on point-and-shoot cameras. DSLR cameras also allow users to set frame rates, ISO settings, and aperture settings that are ideal for low-light situations. The cameras can also be expanded to accommodate bigger flashes and lens filters.
Considerations
While DSLRs have automatic settings, the manual settings may take some time to get used to. Almost every camera has its own manual to help achieve better shots, and prices can increase when accessories like memory, lenses and extra batteries are added on. Point-and-shoots often have everything you need built in, but DSLRs are made to expand. Some kits may not even include a lens.
Features
DSLR cameras can often shoot more than one picture per second. This allows photographers to capture many different action shots, which is an advantage for sports photography. To take pictures that quickly, the camera needs a high-speed media card to store the photos, usually an SD or compact flash card. These high-speed cards will allow the best photo-capturing performance.
Types
The top two DSLR companies are Nikon and Canon. Some of their best-selling cameras have included the Nikon D40, D60, D80 and D200. Some of Canon's best DSLR models are the Rebel, Rebel XT and Rebel XTi. FujiFilm has the S5 Pro, Sony has the Alpha 900 and Pentax has the K200D. Camera companies are constantly increasing DSLR quality and performance with every new release.
