A remote control allows a photographer to become part of the photo.
The Nikon D90 is a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera with the ability to take high-resolution photos and high-definition video. Photos are taken with the camera by operating the shutter button on the top right side. If the photographer wants to take a photo while away from the camera, such as being in the photograph, it requires a compatible remote control. There are two remote controls that work with the Nikon D90.
ML-L3 Wireless Remote
The Nikon ML-L3 wireless remote operates on an infrared system between the camera and the remote, requiring a direct line of sight. The camera must be switched to "remote shutter mode" to allow the remote to operate it. The remote comes with a case that can be attached to the camera's neck strap. It uses a CR-2025 3v battery that comes packaged with the remote.
MC-DC2 Remote
The Nikon MC-DC2 is a remote that plugs into the Nikon D90 via a mini-USB connection. The camera does not have to be in any specific mode to use the remote; simply plug it in. The remote has the ability to lock in place and hold the shutter open for longer exposures, which can be useful for night photography.
Availability
The remote controls compatible with the Nikon D90 are available from Nikon authorized dealers; a list of dealers is available on the Nikon website (see Resources for the link). The MC-DC2 remote is available for purchase from the Nikon website as of November 2010.
