The Things Allowed On Carry On Bags For Airports

Do not wrap gifts; security will unwrap them to check the contents.

When you travel on an airplane, there are several kinds of items that you are prohibited from bringing in your carry-on luggage. Information about what you can bring helps you to travel more efficiently and to get through security checkpoints with less hassle. You are permitted to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a purse, backpack, camera case or laptop bag. All items you bring onto the airplane need to fit in your carry-on bags with the exception of whatever you purchase at the airport.

Food

Food is permitted as long as it is unopened or in a container. Produce that is unpeeled is acceptable, but if it is partially eaten it needs to be wrapped securely. Take snacks or a small meal in case your flight is longer than usual or there are delays at the airport.

Beverages

Beverages, including alcohol, can be purchased after you go through security and carried on the plane. Otherwise, any beverages or liquids that go through security have to contain 3 oz. or less of liquid. Bring as much baby formula or breast milk as you want on the plane, but these items will be inspected by security.

Medication

Prescribed or over-the-counter medicines, including those in aerosol, gel and liquid form, are not regulated as far as amounts permitted in your carry-on. You do need to carry medication in its original container. Store all of your carry-on liquid products in a gallon-size zippered bag. If you have over 3 oz. of any medication, report that to customs officials for inspection.

Valuable Items

When traveling with jewelry, coins or any item that is valuable, ask the security officers who are screening your carry-on luggage to examine the contents in private. This will help in deterring any theft and ensure your safety. If you are traveling with a large amount of cash, keep it with you in your carry-on bag. For international flights, any amount you travel over $10,000 must be reported to U.S. Customs.

Odds and Ends

Carry along reading material, a music player with headphones or hand-held video game player for entertainment during your flight. Knitting and sewing needles, as well as small scissors for cutting thread, are permitted in your carry-on luggage. Travel with a common lighter or book of safety matches in your carry-on, as these are not allowed in your check-in luggage. Fishing rods are permitted as carry-on items, as long as the rod meets space requirements.

Cremation Remains

Transport cremation remains in an urn as a carry-on item. When you go through the security checkpoint, the urn must be scanned by X-ray machines. If the container does not allow a clear screening of the contents, you will not be allowed to carry the urn on the airplane. Under no circumstances is security allowed to open the urn to check the contents.
