Use A Capture Card With Linux

You can use your video device on Linux.

Video capture cards are a great tool for transferring video and audio from external sources such as video cameras, VCRs, television and anything else with video output jacks. If you are running the Linux operating system, you can use your video capture card with VLC, a free multimedia player available in the Linux software repositories. Download and install VLC before continuing these instructions.

Instructions

1. Download and install VLC (see Reference 1).

2. Plug in your video capture card and allow the system to recognize and initialize it. Go to Applications > Sound & Video and open the VLC media player.

3. Click on "Media" and select "Streaming..." from the menu. Click on "Capture Device" in the top tab. Click on "Capture Mode" and select the type of video you'd like to capture.

4. Click "Stream" and locate your capture device from "Source." Click "Next." Choose the destination of the video stream (file, http, etc.) and click "Stream" again. Press "Play" on your device and allow VLC to capture the video. Press "Stop" on both devices to complete the operation.
