Build A Security Box For A Trail Camera

Trail cameras are designed to photograph wildlife without spooking them.

Trail cameras are self-contained camera units that are designed to be attached to a tree or a pole. The camera is triggered by a motion detector and will photograph any animal that happens to walk in front of it. Trail cameras can produce some interesting images from the pure natural of seeing wildlife to the fun of seeing a curious squirrel or bird looking at the camera, and are also used by hunters to identify good hunting areas. Since trail cameras are used outdoors, they may be targets of thieves who are looking for one of their own. Building a security box will help protect your investment.

Instructions

1. Determine the material you are going to build your security box out of. Wood may be the easiest to work with. However it may also be easy to compromise. Steel, while requiring a different set of tools, may be more secure.

2. Measure your trail camera and the location and size of the lens, flash and motion detector.

3. Map out the openings you will need for each of these items on the face of your security box.

4. Drill and cut out the required openings for the lens, flash and detector.

5. Assemble and solder the security box but leave the top off.

6. Connect the top of the security box using three metal hinges. If you have elected to use metal, drill out the holes required for the hinges and secure the hinges using nuts and bolts.

7. Attach lockable latch to the top and front of the security box.

8. Turn the trail camera on and place it inside the security box. Close the lid, and attach an outdoor lock to the latch.

9. Secure the trail camera to the tree or pole using the same connecting hardware that was used with the trail camera.

10. Test the camera by walking in front of it.
