The Nikon D80 comes with a built-in flash that usually suffices in most photographic situations, however serious photographers may want a more powerful and versatile light source for their pictures. In addition to its large camera selection, Nikon produces several types of flashes to mount to bodies. The Nikon D80 is compatible with all of Nikon's flash models, however each model has varying features and power levels.
Nikon SB-R200
The Nikon SB-R200 is fully compatible with the D80 but is a wireless flash that is triggered by an infrared beam fired from a master unit mounted to the D80's hotshoe. The unit is fully compatible with the D80's i-TTL exposure metering system and has 60 degrees of vertical lens coverage and 78 degrees of horizontal coverage. The guide number of the SB-R200 is 33 feet at ISO 100 and 46 feet at ISO 200. The SB-R200 uses a 3-volt lithium battery, contrary to most Nikon flashes which use AA batteries.
SB-600
The SB-600 is a traditional professional flash with a swiveling head and complete compatibility to the Nikon i-TTL exposure system. The SB-600 zoom range is 24-85 mm, but can be extended to 14 mm with the addition of an adapter from Nikon. The swiveling head of the flash rotates 90 degrees upward and 270 degrees sideways. The guide number of the flash is 98 feet at ISO 100 and 138 feet at ISO 200. The maximum recycling time is 2.9 seconds with the use of nickel-cadmium AA batteries.
SB-800
The SB-800 flash is fully compatible with the Nikon D80 and has a guide number of 125 feet at ISO 100. The SB-800 can be used as an on-camera flash, a wireless off-camera flash, or a wireless commander for other off-camera flashes. The swiveling flash head rotate seven degrees downward, 90 degrees upward, and 180 degrees to each side. The SB-800 can have exposure compensation adjusted to plus or minus 3 EV and has a maximum recycling time of 2.7 seconds with the use of nickel-cadmium AA batteries.
SB-900
The SB-900 is the newest (as of December 2010) Nikon Speedlight and features a guide number of 111.5 feet at ISO 100 and 157 feet at ISO 200. The swiveling flash head on the SB-900 rotates seven degrees downward, 90 degrees upward, and 360 degrees sideways. The SB-900 has a zoom coverage range of 12-200 mm on the D80 and also automatically identifies Nikon mounted color filters, adjusting white balance accordingly. The SB-900 can be used with the D80 on the hotshoe, remotely, or act as a commander for other wireless flashes. The SB-900 takes all AA batteries but performs best with four alkaline-manganese AA batteries.
