Lcd Projection Tv Lamps

There are a wide variety of liquid crystal display (LCD) lamps. At some point the lamp of a front or rear projection television will likely need to be replaced. The length of operating time can be increased with proper installation, a little bit of maintenance, purchasing a higher end lamp or any combination of these strategies to increase the life of a LCD projection TV lamp. The lamp can be replaced by the user by following the instructions in the owner's manual for the television or a service technician. The less expensive option may not be the right choice for purchasing a new lamp for a specific model of projection television. The following information will help make the right decision when purchasing a new LCD Projection TV lamp.

Function

LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, projection TV lamps are used with front or rear projection televisions. The light shines through red, green and blue color panels to create the color, brightness and contrast viewed on the television screen.

Types

There are three different types of projection lamps: halogen, metal halide and most recently added LED. Halogen bulbs are the lowest price. However, typically last less than 1,000 hours. Metal halide bulbs are more expensive, but last more than 2,000 hours. New LED projection bulbs may last up to 60,000 hours according to Samsung's advertisements.

Considerations

To maintain the life of a projection TV lamp, keep air filters clean or replace according to manufacturer's recommendations so the bulb does not overheat. Warm environments also contribute to a shorter lifespan of the bulb. In addition, change the picture setting to "normal" or "standard" to prolong the life of the bulb. When changing the bulb, wear gloves to keep oil off bulb which can cause the bulb to burst.

Warning

Always allow bulb to cool before replacing. Serious burns may result from removing a hot bulb. Most lamps contain mercury, an environmental hazard. Please contact your local waste management office for information to dispose of the old bulb properly.

Potential

New LED lights have a life span of more than 20,000 hours. As these new lamps become more widely available, this offers a tremendous savings over the life of the television.
