The Best Radar Laser Detectors

Hand-held or cruiser-mounted RADAR "guns" are used for traffic enforcement in the majority of states in the U.S. These systems project a high-frequency pulse between the gun and a moving target, then measure the time it takes for that pulse to bounce back to the transmitter unit, and display the estimated speed of that target. Inversely, drivers use RADAR "detectors" to attempt to thwart these traffic enforcement threats. Today there are two major manufacturers of these systems: Escort, and Beltronic. Together these companies comprise well over 50 percent of the domestic detector market.

Escort Redline

The Escort Redline is a dash-mounted RADAR detector. The unit is one of the most sensitive on the market, and is capable of handling all known signal threats. Features include X, K, and super-wide Ka bands, superior range, both front and rear detection, and long-range dual-antenna processing. The unit is priced at $499, as of early 2010.

Escort 9500x

The 9500x is also a dash-mounted RADAR detector. Although the system offers "all-band" detection, the real advantage of this system is its GPS positioning and Web-based database management capability. Other features include 360-degree detection, and a safety camera database. Price for this unit is $499.

Bel RX65 Professional

Beltronic's RX65 is an outstanding dash-mounted unit offering "all-band" detection in addition to next-gen international coverage. Features include pop-up detection, fast response to Ka resolution, a multiple target capability, frequency auto scan, and Ku-band detection for international use. The unit is priced at $299.
