Dial Calls On International Cell Phones

International cell phones operate on much the same principles as those in the United States. There are a few things to keep in mind when dialing, though, so you don't have to struggle with a muddle of numbers before you hit the jackpot.

Instructions

1. Dial "00" and then the country code if you want to make an international call. For calling back to the United States, you would use "001" then the area code and the phone number. Use the appropriate country code for the destination you are calling; for example, Mexico is "0052" and Germany is "0049."

2. Omit the country code if you are calling in the same country, If you are calling a Spanish phone number from a Spanish cell phone, for example, you don't need a country code. Dial the area code directly and then the phone number. Most countries outside of the United States use a cell phone system that doesn't have area codes so you only need to use these if you want to call a traditional landline.

3. Remember not to dial country or area codes if you are "roaming." For example, if you have a Bolivian cell phone and travel to the United States and want to call back to Bolivia, you won't need to dial the Bolivian country code because your cell phone has the same one.

4. Check that the phone you are using is unlocked and will work in the area you are going to if you want to use it when traveling. European cell phones will work all over Europe but you need a "tri band" cell to make it work in the United States, which uses a different system to most other countries.
