Put A Mackie Back In Hui Mode

Digital boards can control up to 16 software audio tracks.

A Mackie controller enables recording engineers and musicians to control music recording software with a physical mixing board. Using a physical board can be less tiresome for engineers than clicking a mouse for hours. Mackie digital boards can control up to 16 software audio tracks. Mackie created the HUI mode for its controller to connect with Pro Tools recording software. Shifting to HUI mode on a Mackie controller takes less than five minutes. Users must navigate the Mackie menu using the channel "Select" buttons then engage HUI mode.

Instructions

1. Turn off the Mackie control device. You can turn off the controller by flicking the "Power" switch on the Mackie's back end. Wait several minutes for the machine to power down.

2. Check the Mackie Control's USB connection to the computer. A loose cable connection will stop the controller from switching to HUI mode. The Mackie controller needs to recognize the computer connection before it will offer HUI as mode of operation. The USB cable must be running from the "USB" output on the back side of the controller to an available USB input on the computer. Wiggle the cable ends to check if they are loose. If they are loose, unplug and replug the connection.

3. Turn on the Mackie while holding down the Ch. 1 and Ch. 2 select buttons. The channel select buttons sit on the far left side of the controller beneath the "Mute" buttons on channel one and two. The LCD display will read "Start Up" for several minutes.

4. Press down the channel 4 V-Pot button on the controller. The LCD display on the right side of the controller will read "Modes of Operation". Press the V-Pot button once again to choose "HUI Mode". You will hear a small beep inside the mixer once the new mode has been activated.

5. Open Pro Tools audio project and create a new MIDI track. With Pro Tools open, select "Track" then "New Track". Choose "Software Instrument". Click on the newly created MIDI track. Move the channel one volume fader on the Mackie controller. Watch the new MIDI track as you do this. The digital track's volume knob will move in unison with the Mackie volume fader. If it does not move in unison, repeat the above steps to reconnect the controller to Pro Tools.
