A flash drive camcorder is any video camcorder that uses flash-based memory to save recorded video. The are usually smaller than other kinds of camcorders, but have their own limitations as well.
Function
A flash drive camcorder can be used like any other video camcorder. Some can also take pictures as well as record video. Since flash memory itself is usually so small, flash drive camcorders are often much smaller than camcorders that use recordable DVDs or magnetic hard drives.
Durability
Flash memory uses no moving parts, so a flash drive is more durable than a traditional magnetic hard drive or a drive that records to DVD. A flash drive is more apt to survive heavy jostling or even a drop on the ground.
Limitations
As of August 2010, most flash drive camcorders cost more than other kinds of camcorders and have less internal storage space. Camcorders with traditional hard drives may have over 100 GB of storage, while a flash drive camcorder usually has less than 20 GB of on-board storage space. Usually, they rely on external flash drives like SD cards to increase their storage space.
