If you want to keep your HTC phone running smoothly, then you will have to keep the device up-to-date. Updating the device involves upgrading the software. Periodically, Microsoft will send updates to your HTC device, to enable you to upgrade the Windows Mobile software. When you upgrade the software on your device, you will increase performance and security while updating or adding features to your HTC phone.
Instructions
1. Check the Microsoft Update Web page (see Resources) to determine if you need the update for your specific device.
2. Download ActiveSync if your HTC operating system is running Windows XP or a previous version, or Windows Mobile Device Center if your HTC operating system is running Windows Vista or later versions (see Resources).
3. Backup your files and data on a memory card or synchronize it onto your computer.
4. Visit the Microsoft Update Web page (see Resources) or your wireless provider's Web page to locate the upgrade software needed for your device.
5. Click the "Download" icon next to the upgrade for your phone. Press the "Save" button, and then select the option to save to "Desktop."
6. Create a name for the upgrade, then click "Save." Wait for download to complete, and then double-click the shortcut on the desktop to run the installation wizard. Press "Next" when prompted.
7. Read the terms and conditions, click the box to agree, then press "Next."
8. Connect your device to your computer with a USB cord, and then open ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center. Disable the hibernation feature on your computer. Also, confirm that your phone has at least a 50 percent battery charge. Indicate that you completed these steps, by checking the appropriate box on the installation wizard, and then press "Next."
9. Click the "Next" button on the following three screens. Wait for the installation to start, and do not unplug your device. The installation may take up to an hour to install.
10. Click the "Finish" button once you receive the "Successful Upgrade" message.
