Reduce Light Leaks Of A Holga 120 Camera

A Holga 120 is a good camera in many ways, but often it allows light to leak through damaging the pictures. Although some photographers like to take advantage of the effects of the light leaks, many would like to fix it. Follow the suggestions below for correcting light leaks in a Holga 120 camera.

Instructions

1. Remove the back of the camera to begin. The back piece will slide down and loosen from metal clamps. Looking into the back, there will be film spools on the left and on the right.

2. Cover the red exposure counter window on the back cover with a small rectangle of cardboard. Hold the cardboard up while the film is advancing, and then place it back.

3. Spray paint the entire inside of the camera a flat black color. The inside is originally a shiny or glossy black, which is highly reflective to light and may cause light leaks.

4. Fix loosely wound film spools. Having tension problems in the spool allows light leaking in the edges of the film prior to processing. There are various ways to fix this problem, but the easiest is with a small piece of cardboard, about 1 inch by 3/8 inch, folded in half and placed between the spool and the bottom of the camera.

5. Replace the the back of the camera. Make sure the clips slide back into place.

6. Use photographers' or electrical tape to keep the back in place. Put black tape over all of the seams between the front and the back of the camera.
