When you take pictures with a digital camera, the picture files are stored on an SD card. You can transfer picture files to your computer via an SD card slot, and from there onto other portable storage devices. Sometimes during the transfer of picture files from an SD card to your computer, the files can end up lost or accidentally deleted. There are programs available that can recover picture files from an SD card in the event that you accidentally delete them.
Instructions
1. Rejuvenate your picture files from an SD card using Recuva, a file recovery program that you can download free (see Resources.) After the download is complete, insert your SD card into the appropriate slot on your computer or laptop. Access the drive selection menu on your computer and select the SD card. Thumbnails of deleted picture files will be displayed; use the check boxes to select the ones you want to restore. Click on the "Restore" button.
2. Use eImage Recovery to retrieve picture files from your SD card (see Resources.) This program costs $27, as of 2010, but it will restore reformatted files as well as deleted files. Once you have installed the program, put the SD card in the correct slot in your computer. Go to your computer's drive menu and click on the SD card. A list of deleted picture items will appear. Choose the picture files that you want to retrieve. Click on the recycling bin icon to restore the picture files from your SD card back onto your computer.
3. Install TOKIWA DataRecovery. Once the download is finished, slide the SD card into its designated port on your PC. Bring up your drive selection menu and choose the SD card. Click on the "Scan Files" button; this will bring up a display menu containing deleted picture files from the SD card. Pick the deleted picture files that you want to retrieve and click on the "Recovery" button to restore the pictures to your computer. TOKIWA is a free program you can download on the Internet (use the link in Resources.)
