Panasonic Dmrt3040 Troubleshooting

The Panasonic DMR-T3040 is a DVD video recorder with playback capabilities. The T3040 works well under most circumstances, but may occasionally malfunction during use. The most common problems experienced by users are issues involving a lack of response to commands and issues involving the picture and sound. The following strategies for troubleshooting your DMR-T3040 will address most of those issues.

Recorder Does Not Operate

The T3040 may not operate sometimes as it may be set to the wrong function: First, make sure the device is properly set to "Record" or "Playback," depending on how you are using the machine. You can change the mode by pressing the "DVD" button. The mode will change between "Record" and "Playback" each time you press the button.

Other reasons for the device not working are safety features built into the machine to prevent damage to the T3040: If a "U14" message appears on the display when the device isn't working, it means the system is running too hot. Place the recorder in a better ventilated area and wait for "U14" message to disappear from the display before using the machine again.

You will need to reset the T3040 if another safety feature is keeping the machine from operating properly. To reset the machine, press the power button to place the machine in "Standby" mode. If pressing the power button does not place it in "Standby" mode, press and hold the power button for approximately 10 seconds to force it into "Standby" mode. Press the power button again to restart the machine. Any errors should then be cleared from the machine and it should work as normal.

Picture and Sound Problems

Problems with the picture or sound are often the result of an improper connection between the T3040 and the television. Check that all of the wires are properly connected to the machine and to the television.

If the wires are inserted properly and you still have a problem with the picture, make sure that the television is set to the correct input setting. Most televisions need to be set to the "Video 1" or "Video 2" input channel, while some older televisions need to be set to channel "00," "03" or "04." Consult your television's instruction manual for more information on which channel to set.

If you still have problems with the sound after checking the connections, press the "Audio" button on the remote control to switch to a different audio setup. The T3040 has options for Stereo and Monoaural audio. Distortion may be heard when using the Stereo setting, and pressing the "Audio" button will switch to Monoaural.

Take Good Self Portraits With A Cell Phone

You can take a good self-portrait with a cell phone camera.

Everyone has seen the typical cell phone self-portrait: the subject is either holding the phone at arm's length or is shooting into a mirror and you can see the camera (and sometimes the flash). You can take a good self-portrait with a cell phone if you remember one thing--the camera doesn't take the picture until you take your finger off the button.

Instructions

1. Stand in front of a mirror.

2. Hold your cell phone up in front of you with the camera turned on and aimed into the mirror. You should be looking at your cell phone screen and seeing your reflection in the mirror on the screen.

3. Adjust your pose until you are happy with the image and cannot see your arm in the cell phone screen. Press the camera button in, but do not release it.

4. Holding the camera steady in position, turn away from the mirror. Release the camera button and the camera will snap the picture.

Hook Up My Canon Camera To My Lcd Sanyo Tv

You don't have to think too long to find a reason why a camera that can plug directly into your TV is helpful. With a direct connection between your Canon camera and Sanyo LCD TV, you can review you photos on a large screen or get the family together to look at pictures of your trip to Cancun. Setting this up isn't difficult; you just need to have the right cables.

Instructions

1. Check your camera box to see if your camera shipped with any TV hookup cables. Some retailers will include these cables as a bonus or purchasing incentive, but in most cases you will have to buy a separate cable to connect your Canon camera to your LCD TV. Canon sells two kinds of mini HDMI cables for HD-ready cameras so that you can watch your videos in HD on an HDTV. For photos and non-HD video cameras, you can use an AV cable to display your cameras contents on your TV.

2. Check your Sanyo TV to see which kinds of inputs you have available, or which inputs your TV supports. Most Sanyo LCD TVs support HDMI cables, and all TVs have a AV hookup cables, which are red, white and yellow. Make sure you have a free spot for the kind of cable your camera uses.

3. Attach the cable to the side of your Canon camera. Different camera models have the output jacks in different locations. Look for a component, video or HDMI output port beside where you plug in the USB cable to your camera. On some of Canon's compact point-and-shoot models, the video out port is concealed beneath a small panel on the back of the camera, under the shutter button. Refer to your manual if you aren't sure or can't find it.

4. Connect the other end of the cable to corresponding input on your Sanyo LCD TV. If you connected an HDMI cable to your camera, plug the other end into the HDMI port; if you connected the AV cable, connect the other end into the corresponding yellow, white and red ports -- though you only need to connect the red and white cables for videos with sound. Turn the camera on and turn on your TV.

5. Press the "review" or "playback" button on your Canon camera, which is represented by a "play" icon. Use your TV remote to choose the corresponding input. The images from your camera display on your TV. Use the camera's control pad to move through pictures and to play videos. Press left and right to scroll through the images or zoom in and out to see an area of a photo or to see more than one photo at once.

How Does Thermal Imaging Work

Effectiveness

Thermal imaging is a kind of infrared imaging science that can detect radiation in a certain infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum and produce radiation images. Thermal imaging works because infrared radiation is produced by every object and it's based on its temperature. The higher the temperature, the higher the amount of radiation is emitted from the object. According to the blackbody radiation law, thermal imaging allows you to see your environment without any visible light or illumination. Thermal imaging has the ability to see warm objects against cooler background, and that allows you the ability to see warm-blooded animals and humans when they are out in the environment. This is called the second law of thermodynamics.

Function

Thermal imaging works because it shows the amount of infrared energy emitted, transmitted and reflected by any object. Incident energy is when the profile of energy is viewed through a device, emitted energy is when it is intended to be measured, transmitted energy passes through a subject from the remote thermal source, and reflected energy is the amount of energy that will reflect off a surface of an object from the remote thermal source. This means that incident energy = emitted energy + transmitted energy + reflected energy.

Uses

Thermal imaging works for many different occupations and conveniences. Thermal imaging can be found in firefighting, power line maintenance, construction and it can even be found in cars. Firefighters use thermal imaging because it allows them to see through smoke and locate people by the radiation they are giving off of their body. Power line maintenance technicians use thermal imaging because when parts begin to overheat, thermal imaging can locate the problems and hazards. Thermal imaging can help in building construction because it can notice heat leaks and improve air-conditioning. Thermal imaging has been included in vehicles because of its ability to detect warm-blooded mammals on the road when you are driving.

Solder Stereo Miniplugs

Learning solder is a great skill to have and can be acquired after careful training and practice. One of the ways to put this soldering technique to use is by learning solder stereo mini-plugs.

Instructions

1. Gather the materials you will need to solder your stereo mini-plugs. This should include a solder gun, solder, electrical tape and the stereo wire you are wanting to solder. You also need to make sure you have a clean, heat-proof work surface near a plug.

2. Strip the insulated wires (2-3mm only) and create a third wire out of the sheath. This third wire will become the common wire, the other two will maintain their left and right statuses respectively. If you strip the wire completely, you run the risk of the wires touching which will cause them not to work or to short circuit.

3. Tin the wire with solder by heating it up and coating it with solder. Scratch the connectors on the back of the plug to help the solder adhere. Tin the area where you plan to connect the cable. Join the left, right and then the common.

4. Apply electrical tape around each connection to insulate them. Be light on the tape, so the cover will fit back over. Slip the case back over the wire and screw everything together. Test everything with an ohmmeter to make sure it is all connected, grounded and working safely.

Develop Old Kodak Film

Old film comes in reels.

Modern digital cameras process images without the use of film, making them instantly available for viewing. Old film made by companies like Kodak required developing, either by a professional laboratory or by using film-developing chemicals at home. Many color films, including Kodak’s "Kodacolor II" and "Kodacolor 400," use a standardized developing process known as C41. If you have an old roll of Kodak film at home, try developing it yourself following the C41 process.

Instructions

1. Open the film roll at the bottom with the bottle opener and, holding the film by its edges, pull the film reel from the case. This step must be done in complete darkness to avoid fogging (overexposing) the film.

2. Insert the end of the film into the film spiral, pushing it past the ball bearing locators. Hold the spiral in both hands and rotate the right hand side forwards and backwards to wind the film onto the spiral.

3. Load the spiral into the developing tank, sliding the center hole over the tube in the middle of the tank, and screw the lid on. It is now safe to turn on the light.

4. Pour developer, bleach, fixer and stabilizing chemicals into separate measuring jugs. Use enough of each chemical to fill the developing tank.

5. Fill the bowl with hot water at 110 degrees Fahrenheit and place the developing tank and the measuring jugs in the hot water for a few minutes. Check the temperature of the chemicals, rinsing the thermometer before inserting into each one. When the chemicals have reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit, they are ready for use.

6. Remove the stopper from the developing tank’s lid and pour in the developer and replace the stopper. Start the timer, agitate the tank then replace it in the water. For Kodacolor II and Kodacolor 400 film, leave in the developing solution for 3 1/4 minutes.

7. Drain the tank and add the bleach. Agitate the tank and replace in the water for 6 1/2 minutes. Agitate the tank again after 3 minutes.

8. Drain the bleach and fill a clean measuring jug with hot water at 110 degrees Farenheit. Pour the hot water into the tank, place again in the bowl and leave for 3 1/4 minutes.

9. Empty the tank and fill with the fixing chemical, agitate and place in the bowl of water. Leave for 6 1/2 minutes, agitating half way through; then drain and add hot water, leaving to stand for 3 1/4 minutes before draining.

10. Pour the stabilizing chemical into the tank and place in the hot water for 1 1/2 minutes before draining.

11. Open the processing tank and remove the film spiral and pull out the film, holding it at the edges. Run the film through the squeegee to remove excess liquid and hang to dry for 20 minutes.

Nikon Mb10 Instructions

The MB-D10 is a battery pack designed for use with the Nikon D700, D300S and D300 cameras. Unlike battery packs for earlier DSLRs from Nikon, the MB-D10 screws on to the camera without the need for taking the battery door off the camera.

Battery

Load the MS-D10EN tray into the MB-D10 and slide two charged EN-EL3 batteries into the MB-D10. Line up the battery pack with the bottom of the camera and rotate the dial to screw it in. Turn on the camera as you normally would. The MB-D10 also has a vertical-orientation shutter button so when you shift the camera to shoot vertically, you don't have to make an awkward reach to the normal shutter button to shoot.

AA Batteries

When used with the MS-D10 battery tray, the MB-D10 will run on eight AA batteries of any type, including lithium AAs and nickel-metal hydride rechargeable AAs, which last longer. This will also increase the frame rate of your D700 or D300 to eight frames per second.

EN-EL4A

Increase the frames per second of your Nikon D700 from five frames per second to eight, or the range of your D300 from six frames per second to eight, by using the MB-D10 in conjunction with the EN-EL4A rechargeable camera battery and the BL-3 battery chamber cover. The EN-EL4A also requires either the MH-21 or MH-22 Quick Charger, instead of the charger supplied with your camera.

Difference Between Lithium & Alkaline Batteries

Alkaline and lithium batteries are the two most common types of batteries used as personal power sources. Both have different chemical compositions and voltage ranges; these differences become more significant as lithium batteries cross over into the AA and AAA market that alkaline batteries once dominated.

Function

Alkaline batteries use zinc and manganese oxide to generate power, while lithium batteries use lithium metal or compounds as their anode.

Types

Lithium batteries are mostly known as the small coin-shaped batteries used to power watches, calculators and small remote controls. However, lithium batteries have expanded into AA and AAA versions to compete with alkaline batteries.

Effects

Lithium batteries produce twice as much voltage as alkaline batteries, giving them longer life, and making their AA and AA versions more expensive than their alkaline counterparts.

Misconceptions

Lithium batteries are not the same as lithium ion batteries. Unlike lithium ion, lithium batteries are not rechargeable.

Warning

The Transportation Security Administration heavily restricts carrying lithium batteries on airplanes due to the high risk of discharge if they short circuit. Some states also restrict the amount of batteries sold due to their suspected use in meth labs.

Disrupt A Spy Camera

In today's age, it seems that everyone and their brother is out to check up on their neighbors or find out what everyone else is up to. Whether it is setting up a personal security system around his house, or spying on what is going on inside of her home when she is away, setting up spy cameras are becoming a hot trend. Yet when we want to be shielded and given our own privacy, what can be do to block the unwanted watchful eye of Big Brother? There is a way to disrupt a spy camera and earn back your much needed privacy and security.

Instructions

1. Buy a spy camera jammer online. Jammers can be bought online at websites like IPMart.com. They come in varying sizes but look much like the remotes to a standard TV system. These handy and discrete devices disrupt spy camera recordings and Bluetooth signals. Some even have GPS tracking devices and features to block cellphone calls.

2. Order and pay. After making your selection, add the item to your virtual shopping cart and then proceed to the checkout. You will need to send your personal information, shipping address and your credit card information to pay for the spy camera jammer.

3. Charge the battery. Once your spy camera jammer has arrived, read the instructions on properly charge your device. Some come with a rechargeable battery already installed, but you may need to supply your own batteries. Either way, be certain that your jammer is charged and ready to go before using it.

4. Turn the spy camera jammer on. Look for specific directions to incorporate your own settings.

5. Hide the spy camera jammer. These gadgets are small and easy to slip into a pocket or bag inconspicuously. When you're on the go, these devices will disrupt signals to varying ranges--whatever the particular one you have bought touts. No one will be the wiser and you can go about your business in full privacy.

Take Great Photos With A 500mm Zoom Lens

Working with a long-range zoom lens can sometimes be the only way of getting that perfect shot. A 500 mm zoom lens is an ideal choice for sporting events and wildlife photography and other situations where the photographer cannot get close to his or her subject. A 500 mm zoom lens can also be a challenge to work with due to lighting difficulties and the likelihood of "camera shake." If you use the right tools for the job, though, anyone can take a decent photograph with a 500mm zoom lens.

Instructions

1. Look for a lens with an image stabilizer for the best photos. If you cannot afford a lens with an image stabilizer, try to purchase a model that has some type of stabilization built in.

2. Get as close to the subject as possible. Even though you have the ability to take a shot from a distance, even the best lenses are not as sharp at their longest zoom length.

3. Use a tripod to prevent camera shake. A zoom lens can make your camera front heavy, which makes it more difficult to handle. In low-light situations, you will also need to use a slow shutter speed, making a tripod a necessity.

4. Use the lowest ISO possible. Lower ISO gives greater quality, but with a zoom lens, even in bright sunlight, you may need a higher ISO. In most zoom situations, your flash won't have as long a reach as the lens itself.

5. Use the timer, especially in low-light situations. When setting up for a long-distance, low-light shot, the shutter speed will need to be slow, and any camera shake will cause interference. Just pressing the button on the camera may result in too much camera shake to keep your photo sharp.

Use A Canon Eos 60d Dslr Camera

The Canon 60D digital SLR camera offers features that allow you to shoot in nearly any environment.

Canon produces the Canon 60D as one of the company's EOS series digital SLR cameras. Sitting somewhere between the T2I and 7D in terms of price, it offers many of the same functions as other cameras in the digital EOS line, but with some differences. The latest Canon EOS 60D model has high-definition video capture and a fold-out LCD screen. The many advanced features of the 60D require some time to learn, but the basics are easy.

Instructions

1. Insert the battery. If the battery is charged, it's ready to go into your Canon 60D. You will typically find the battery compartment of every EOS digital SLR camera on the bottom under the right hand grip. Open the compartment door by pushing the latch towards the body and then lifting the door up. Then slide the battery into the opening contact points first. Once it is in, shut the door by pushing it in until it clicks.

2. Attach the lens. Lenses for Canon DSLR cameras are interchangeable, meaning the same lens can fit on the Canon T2I, 7D, 5D and 60D, and they attach the same way. Unscrew and remove the caps from the lens and the front of the 60D body. The lens and the body will have matching white or red index lines that indicate the attachment position. Align these with each other and then carefully push the lens into the body. Then turn the lens clockwise (when you are facing the front of the camera) until it snaps into place.

3. Set your focus option. The focus option for the Canon EOS 60D, like many digital SLR cameras, is changed using a switch on the lens. You can choose automatic focus (AF) or manual focus (MF). Choosing auto focus means that the camera will focus for you, but with manual focus you will have to turn the focus on the lens before you take a photo.

4. Insert the memory card. The Canon 60D DSLR uses an SD card to hold your photos. To insert the SD card, open the memory card latch on the right of the 60D by sliding it back and then folding it out. Once open, slide the card contact points first and with the card label facing the back of the camera. Then close the cover.

5. Turn on the power. The power switch for the Canon 60D digital is located on the top left of the camera just under the mode dial. To turn it on, flip the switch from left to right.

6. Set the mode. The Canon 60D digital SLR offers several modes. To begin with, you will probably want to use the automatic mode until you are more comfortable with the manual settings. In automatic mode, the Canon 60D will choose the shutter speed and f-stop for you based on the lighting conditions and environment. To choose automatic mode, turn the mode dial until the green rectangle is next to the arrow.

7. Flip the LCD monitor out. The LCD monitor screen comes out by simply pulling it out from the back of the Canon 60D camera body. Once it is pulled out, it can be used while out or you can flip it around and push it back into the body so that the LCD screen is facing out from the back.

8. Focus the subject. Point the Canon 60D DLSR towards your subject using the viewfinder or LCD screen. Using the viewfinder saves battery power, but if you feel the need to use the LCD monitor screen, you can press the camera screen button found at the upper right of the back. You can then autofocus by pressing the shutter button half way. If on manual focus, you will need to twist the focus on the lens until the photo is sharp in the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor screen.

9. Take the picture. Once you are focused, take the picture by pressing the shutter button all the way down. You will hear the shutter click and you can then view your photo on the LCD screen for a moment after taking the picture regardless of whether you turned the LCD on or not.

Infrared Camera Operation Safety

Infrared photography uses cameras almost identical to a typical SLR such as the one shown here.

Infrared (IR) cameras are sensitive to the extreme red end of the light spectrum. This light is invisible to the human eye but does not extend into the thermal range. Photographers can use IR film in regular film cameras or use IR sensitive digital cameras to take IR photographs. In either case, the safety concerns are almost identical to those associated with normal photography.

Never Photograph the Sun Without Solar Filters

The sun must never be photographed without solar filters

Photographing the sun can produce stunning photographs that can show sunspots, coronal ejections and temperature variations; however, an infrared camera will not do any of this without special solar filters. Aiming a camera at the sun can result in sever eye injury or blindness. Special solar filters that reduce the total light transmission by 10,000 to 100,00 times are required and IR filters do not come close to this reduction, even though they appear very dark to the naked eye.

IR Cameras Used for Scientific Purposes

Some laser light is invisible to the human eye but can still cause damage.

Infrared (IR) cameras use an IR filter that allows a small slice of the light spectrum to pass through and register on the electronic sensor. This small slice of the light spectrum is invisible to the naked eye so care must be taken when photographing laser applications using light energy that may pass through the IR filter and the viewfinder but not be detectable to the human eye. Invisible light energy passing through the viewfinder can damage the human eye and cause blindness.

Infrared Cameras Do Not Detect Heat

Infrared cameras will not detect heat or a heat source.

Infrared (IR) cameras are not thermal image cameras. The part of the light spectrum that contains thermal wavelengths is so far removed from infrared, even deep infrared, that detection of thermal energy is impossible with an IR camera. Because IR cameras will not detect heat energy, care must be taken when working in an environment in which heat emitters can be found. The camera and any photographs produced will provide no prior warning or indication of heat-emitting objects.

Ultraviolet Radiation Will Not Be Detected by the Camera but It Will Pass Through the Viewfinder

Arc welding produces dangerous levels of ultraviolet radiation.

When using an infrared (IR) camera to photograph objects emitting ultraviolet (UV) radiation care must be taken to limit the amount of time you spend looking at the UV emitter through the viewfinder. The UV radiation will not register on the sensor or show itself on the digital view screen but it can pass through the glass viewfinder, invisible and undetectable, and damage your eye.

Infrared Cameras Work Best in Bright Sunlight

Using an Infrared camera during the sunniest time of the day can result in severe sunburn.

Because infrared (IR) cameras fitted with an IR filter allow only a small slice of the IR spectrum to enter the camera, the best time to take IR photographs is during the brightest time of the day. Unfortunately, this is the most dangerous time of the day if you consider sun exposure. Spending an afternoon taking infrared photographs can result in unhealthy levels of UV exposure so care must be take in the form of sun block or protective clothing.

Vestax Turntable Pitch Control Problems

The Vestax Corporation manufactures and distributes electronic products for DJs. With a lineup of affordable mixers, controllers and turntables, Vestax equipment has received accolades from its peers. Pitch control problems have arisen in older turntable models but can be resolved.

Pitch Control Issues

The pitch control of a turntable handles the quick speed adjustment needed for DJs during beat-matching of two tracks. Because the pitch is so important during this type of music playing, even the slightest variance of pitch can ruin a mix. New Vestax models of turntables, such as the 2300 Mkii, contain two pitch controllers per unit. The main pitch varies from +/-10, but at zero pitch, the speed of the record tends to fluctuate greatly.

Software Pitch Control Issues

DJ software is available from a variety of manufacturers with special control vinyl, allowing information to be read digitally and broadcast through the vinyl source. When using the Vestax line of turntables in tandem with DJ mixing software, the pitch control gives erratic readings when compared to the software.

Solutions

For stand alone problems, contact Vestax directly for pitch control replacement. For software issues, consult the settings of each connection in the appropriate window. Set the latency to the absolute maximum and adjust any pitch settings to reflect the same.

Use A Camcorder With Ustream

Camcorders can be used to broadcast live content on the Internet.

Ustream.tv is a website that consists of live video-streaming channels and networks. You can stream content online for free using a Ustream platform. Many camcorder devices support live streaming directly from the camera, but some machines are able to transfer content only from the camera's hard drive. High-definition camcorders offer better quality output than in-built Web cameras, but only cameras that have DVi Livewire capabilities are able to support live capturing. Setting up a live broadcast from a Ustream account is easy to do as long as the camera device supports live streaming.

Instructions

1. Sign up for a Ustream account (see Resources). The registration process takes two minutes and requires a valid email address. Unlike other live-streaming services, Ustream is free.

2. Consult the manual for your camcorder device to find out if it supports live streaming. Another way to tell is to see if the camcorder has an input socket for a Firewire cable. Without this socket, you are unable to capture live video. Camcorders usually require a cable with a 4-pin connector, whereas computers usually need a 6-pin connector.

3. Connect the Firewire cable to the camcorder device, and connect the other end to the Firewire socket on your computer. Turn on your camcorder and change the setting to the relevant output setting, for example, PC Mode. This will vary depending on the make of your camera, so consult the manual if you don't know which setting to use for output.

4. Wait for your computer to recognise the device as a camera source. Allow the computer to download the relevant settings before you begin using the camcorder.

5. Sign into Ustream.

6. Choose the category of video that you want to stream. There are a wide variety of options from which to choose, from live events to entertainment to sports. Once you have chosen your category, click "Create Show."

7. Fill in the online form with the name of your show, and click "Create."

8. Wait for the system message from your computer that says "Ustream.tv is requesting access to your camera and microphone." Click "Allow."

9. Click "Start Broadcast" when you are ready to broadcast live to the public.

Nikon Lens Troubleshooting

The Nikon lens is one of the best on the market. Nikon lenses are robust, and the company provides great support if anything goes wrong with your lens and you have time to send it out. But what happens if you are on a shoot? Quick troubleshooting could save you from loss of time and money.

Cleanliness

The first thing you should look at is whether the lens on your Nikon is clean. Are there specks of dirt apparent on the lens or on the inside covering the mirror? If there are large collections of dust in your lens, your auto focus may not perform correctly. If the lens is not clean, try swabbing it with a contact cleaner. If you are uncomfortable performing a cleaning service, take it to a professional.

Focus

If you're taking pictures that come out hazy and out of focus even though you are sure you have hand-focused correctly or have left it to the auto focus, check to make sure the problem is not sensor-related. Switch your camera to single-area auto focus without any priority such as closest subject or area, and take some photos. If they are still coming out hazy, then the sensors are probably at fault. Try changing the contrast settings on the body of your camera. You will find do this on your specific model by looking in the manual.

Lens or Body

If you are consistently getting bad shots and have ruled out human error, try switching the lens you're using with one of a similar make. If the issue is solved, then you have narrowed it down to your lens. If not, your body is at fault. Check in the instruction manual provided with the lens or body, and see what it suggests or take it to a professional.

What Is Magnification Factor

Magnification Factor is a microscopy term.

Magnification factor is the size of an image divided by the size of the object. It is a term used to describe radiographic, photographic, or microscopic images.

Function

Magnification factor is used to determine how large an object is in real life compared to the image of the object that was captured by a microscope, camera or other imaging device.

Uses

Determining the actual size of an object, such as a medically significant lesion on a radiographic image, can be essential in proper diagnosis of an illness, as well as determining which treatment strategy is the most appropriate.

Determination

The magnification factor of an image is determined using a mathematical calculation. For example, to determine the size of an object in a photograph when the distance to the object and the focal length (lens strength) are known, the object distance is multiplied by the vertical (or horizontal) image size and this number is then divided by focal length to determine the magnification factor.

Original Baby Shower Gift Ideas

A less commonplace baby-shower gift will stand out in a sea of pink and blue.

Moms-to-be always appreciate traditional gifts from their registries. But maybe you prefer to celebrate this mom and the big event in her life with a gift that's more personal and creative. Put your imagination to work, and give her something that impress her, not just at the shower, but long after.

Preparation Gifts

Consider giving a gift that Mom will appreciate while she's in the hospital or after she returns home. Purchase a roomy tote bag, and fill it with things that come in handy. Include grooming basics such as makeup that she likes, lip balm, body lotion and hair accessories, as well as a stopwatch, a disposable camera and gum or mints. Alternatively, fill the tote with baby-proofing items, a baby monitor and a gift certificate for CPR lessons.

Handmade Gifts

If you knit or crochet, a handmade sweater and an adorable hat are gifts that the mom-to-be is likely to treasure even after her baby can no longer wear them. Mom will treasure a handmade quilt, as well. If you're not handy with knitting needles or a sewing machine, make a no-sew fleece baby blanket. Babies love the feel of fleece. Tie-dye a set of onsies. Or if you're a scrapbooker, prepare a baby album for her.

Memory-Making Gifts

Belly painting and henna kits are safe to use and fun for parents who are artistic. Include a picture frame with the kit so that Dad can take a picture and have it framed. Or buy a kit that allows Mom and Dad to make a plaster cast of the baby bump. Parents take lots of pictures, so the gift of a new camera, video equipment or a gift certificate for a photography session are sure to be appreciated.

Pampering Gifts

Opt for a gift that allows Mom -- and Dad -- to relax. A massage or day at the spa can soothe frazzled nerves as the big day approaches or afterward, and a gift certificate for a restaurant or theater lets Mom and Dad get away for a date night after the baby is born. Another idea: Give Mom a card telling her that you intend to make and deliver one weekly dinner for six weeks after the baby's born.

Pool resources with others attending the shower, and surprise the guest of honor with a getaway for two. A gift certificate for a house-cleaning service is an original shower gift that takes the burden off busy parents.

For the Expectant Mother With Everything

Some moms-to-be don't need much because they have other children or they've purchased everything. In this case, opt for an entirely original gift. Register a star in the baby's name, or make a contribution to the parents' favorite charity. Planting a tree in honor of the baby is gift that appeals to eco-conscious parents.

Control Shadows And Highlights On The Canon 10d

Digital SLRs can capture a wide range of shadows and highlights.

Digital cameras such as the Canon 10D have a more restricted exposure range than the human eye. The eye is particularly adept at rapidly adjusting to different light levels, so scanning a scene with deep shadows and bright highlights gives the eye no problems. Because any camera is more restricted in the range of brightness it can capture, it is important to control the exposure to capture the maximum range of shadows and highlights. The Canon 10D has a histogram function that graphically displays the exposure. The aim is a balanced graph with no peaks at the right or left of the histogram.

Instructions

1. Press "Menu". Highlight "Review" in the LCD menu and set this to "ON". Set Review Time to eight seconds to give you time to view the histogram after you take the image.

2. Take images using the RAW camera format. RAW is the equivalent of a digital negative which can hold much more information about the image than a processed JPEG. RAW images need to be processed in a photo editing program, either the Canon software that comes with the camera or similar systems from Adobe or Apple.

3. Photograph your chosen subject. Check the histogram on the LCD screen to make sure that there are no strong peaks on the graph right up against the left or right edges. If there are strong peaks on the right, then reduce the exposure (that is, make the shutter speed faster) and if the peaks are all on the left hand edge, increase the exposure until you get a balanced graph.

4. Process the RAW image to properly show the shadows and highlights by using "Exposure and Highlight Recovery" (or their equivalent commands in your software) to get as much detail in the highlights as possible. Use "Blacks and Fill Light" to recover details from the darkest points in the image. It is surprising how much detail can be recovered from a RAW file.

Calculate Alimony Payments

Calculating alimony

Alimony payments are financial support payments made by one ex-spouse to the other after a divorce. Most states do not have set laws governing alimony payments. It is usually left to the discretion of a judge to dictate whether alimony will be paid and, if so, the amount of a reasonable monthly payment. The judge will also determine the length and conditions of the payments. For instance, a judge may award alimony to a spouse until she finishes a college degree to become self-sustaining, or possibly until a young child enters school, allowing the spouse to return to work. Contrary to many beliefs, alimony is not awarded only to women. Men may also receive alimony payments. The best scenario is when a couple can agree to the terms of the divorce and alimony without the ruling of a judge.

Instructions

1. Calculate the number of years the marriage lasted. The length of the marriage is an important consideration for a judge in awarding alimony payments. Some states have minimum requirements to even consider alimony. In Texas, for instance, the minimum number of years you must be married to qualify for alimony is 10.

2. Decide who the main breadwinner was in the marriage. If one spouse earned a significantly larger salary than the other, a judge may award alimony to the weaker-earning spouse to help him get on his feet. This is usually referred to as rehabilitative alimony.

3. Consider whether young children are involved. Many times a judge will award temporary alimony to a spouse who has been solely responsible for staying home to raise young children for the duration until the children begin school, allowing the spouse to re-enter the workforce.

4. Report why the marriage ended. Several states do not award alimony payments to spouses found guilty of infidelity or other faulty offenses.

5. Determine the spouse's financial ability to pay. A judge will consider income, debts, assets and future earning capacities to help determine the amount of alimony payments, if any.

Studio & Location Lighting Secrets

Studio and outdoor shooting both present lighting challenges.

Lighting is a key element of both motion and still photography. Shooting indoors offers more control of lighting conditions than shooting outdoors, but both come with some difficulty. Some simple lighting changes can set a mood for a scene or bring out the best in a subject. Understanding how lighting works is an essential part of bringing art to life. Use lighting techniques both in the studio and on-location to enhance the aesthetics of a piece and bring out the best in a subject.

Three-point Studio Setup

A three-point studio setup is the most-used lighting design in the business. It uses a key light, a fill light and a back light. The key light is normally two times the brightness of any other light source, and serves to bring out details and give dimension when the camera rolls. To be effective, the key light should be positioned 45 degrees above and to the side of the subject. A fill light is generally half as bright as the key, and serves to enhance details that may otherwise not be picked up on camera. It opens shadowy areas and lightens the dark side of a subject. The back light is adjustable and its brightness changes depending on how reflective the subject and whether the color is light or dark. Lighting is done on a case-by-case basis, so frequent adjustments may be necessary. A light meter or a properly calibrated monitor will help dictate where lights should be placed for shooting.

Lighting and Movement

Motion can make lighting a photo or video shot more difficult. Whether the subject moves only from one position to another or moves to several different marks, each time a subject moves may necessitate a lighting adjustment. Outside the studio, a standard setup may not be effective or practical, which means the ability to solve problems quickly becomes important. Instead of providing all three components in each spot, a lighting technician can overlap or identically arrange lighting in the two spots, or simply adjust fill lights as necessary. Overlapping creates identical lighting continuity from one location to another, making the transition as a subject moves seamless for the viewer. This works best if the movement pathway is short. For longer shots, or those held outdoors, back lighting is not always necessary. Instead, fill lights can be moved or brightness adjusted to light the path as needed, creating an image that is reasonably constant. A basic lighting setup can highlight most of the scene and use select fill lights depending on the camera angle, the reflectivity of the subject and an array of other factors. Fill lights should be adjusted frequently to keep a consistent appearance for the camera.

Filters

Filters are essential for lighting in a studio or on location, both in still photography and in motion pictures. Using filters can create a feel for a scene or simply soften too-harsh light. Neutral density filters can be invaluable to shooting indoors or outdoors. These filters reduce the amount of light that makes it through the lens, making wider apertures outdoors possible. A wide aperture creates a shallow depth of field, putting more focus on the subject. This is especially useful outdoors because background disruptions may be a problem. For outdoor shooting, a graduated filter is essential. The lens is designed with one end clear and one colored, with a blurred transition in between. The lens comes in a variety of colors and is used to adjust too-bright sky tones while leaving the remainder of the shot bright. All filters for still or motion cameras work and fit differently. It is ideal to research and purchase filters through the manufacturer. If this is not possible, several outlets, both online and in person, can assist photographers in selecting the best equipment for their projects.
