Both the Passport 8500 and 8500 X50 model radar detectors are manufactured by Escort Inc. Though they're almost exactly alike in appearance, there are major differences that set them apart. The X50 series is the newer of the two, offering more features, functionality and protection value than the standard 8500.

POP Protection

One of the largest features of the X50 that the standard 8500 didn't support is the "POP" feature. This feature warns you of radar guns operating at lower frequencies than normal. Transferring Hi8 video to MiniDV is easy with two camcorders and an audio/visual cable.

It's easy to transfer Hi8 video to MiniDV with a camcorder for each type. By connecting the camcorders with the basic red, white and yellow audio/visual cables, and setting both cameras to the VTR setting, transferring the Hi8 video to the other camera only takes slightly longer than the time to play the tape.

Instructions

1. Set the two camcorders side by side and connect them with the AV cables. Connect one end of the cables to the output outlets on the Hi8 camcorder and connect the other end to the Handycam's input jacks.

2. Power the cameras on and set both to VTR playback function. Insert the Hi8 tape into the Hi8 camcorder and rewind it to the beginning. Insert the blank MiniDV tape into the Handycam.

3. Press the "Record" button on the Handycam, then the "Play" button on the Hi8 camcorder. Wait for the Hi8 tape to finish playing, then stop both cameras. Rewind the MiniDV tape and play it back on the Handycam to ensure the video was transferred.

Even when you do your best to take care of them, CDs can get scratched easily. These scratches can make your CD skip and even make it nearly impossible to listen to. There is a great way you can fix this problem with something you already have in your home: toothpaste.

Instructions

1. Turn the faucet on warm and have it at medium to low pressure. Hold the CD with your thumb on the edge and your index or middle finger in the center hole. Hold it under the running water just enough to get it wet and clean away any dirt or dust.

2. Apply about a fingertip of toothpaste to the shiny side of the CD (without the lettering or picture on it). Gently smooth the toothpaste over that side of the CD. Make sure you do not scrub the CD with the toothpaste, but gently rub it in. The toothpaste will fill in the scratches.

3. Rinse the CD with hot water and pat dry with a towel. Place the CD back into its case. Repeat this process with the next scratched CD.

The average American discards about 10 batteries a year.

Discarding batteries along with the rest of your trash poses several environmental concerns. Depending on the type, batteries can contain several dangerous heavy metals including mercury and lead which will eventually leak into the soil and groundwater. Incinerating batteries only releases some toxins into the air and concentrates the others in ash. Though the need for a better disposal system is clear, the federal government has set few standards. Though not always required by law, there is an ideal disposal method for each battery type.

Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are most often found in laptops, cell phones and other small electronic devices. Since 1996, the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act has required that manufacturers make these batteries easily removable from the rest of the device and that they be labeled as recyclable. A quick check of the local phone book or Internet search by zip code should be all you need to do in order to find a battery recycling center in your area where you can drop off used batteries. These establishments will determine whether the batteries should be recycled or sent to a hazardous waste landfill.

Alkaline Batteries

The most commonly used and inexpensive battery, alkaline batteries are the least environmentally harmful. Most manufacturers have greatly reduced or completely removed mercury from these household batteries. If the packaging states that the batteries you purchased are low mercury or "no mercury added" you can safely dispose of them with the rest of your trash; this includes rechargeable alkaline batteries. When buying alkaline batteries in the future try to choose those that have the lowest levels of mercury. If you are unsure whether there is mercury present in a used alkaline battery take it to a battery recycling center where they will be able to determine the proper disposal method.

Lead Acid Batteries

Lead acid batteries are used in automotive and other engines to run electrical components. Nearly all businesses that sell replacement automotive batteries will take the exhausted battery. The used batteries are recycled so that new lead acid batteries typically contain between 60 and 80 percent reclaimed material.

"Button" Batteries

The flat, button-shaped batteries typically used in small electronics like hearing aids and watches likely contain significant amounts of mercury or other heavy metals and are therefore considered hazardous waste. Night photography requires a steady camera and a long exposure.

Nighttime photography can be a tricky task. In Greek, the word photography means writing with light, meaning that photography is the art of bending and manipulating light. Nighttime photography is no different. The key to taking great night photos is learning manipulate very little light into a bright detailed photograph. There are many tricks to working in the dark, but in the end the only procedure for learning photograph at night is to experiment and experience.

Instructions

1. Choose a subject. Nighttime photography is generally reserved for photographing buildings or other steady objects. The presence of people (or cars and animals) in night photographs is usually used for a desired blur effect. When choosing a location, keep in mind the presence of light. Choose locations with interesting or unique lighting in terms of angles and color variety.

2. Steady your camera. Nighttime photography requires the use of a tripod unless you are in a well-lit area. If you're photographing architecture, nature, the sky or any other static models (subjects that aren't directly moving in front of you), setting up a tripod is the best measure to ensure a clear photograph with the minimal amount of blur. If a tripod isn't available, set the camera on any flat surface that can provide the angle you desire.

3. Adjust your settings. Before photographing anything, a photographer must set both the aperture and shutter speed. It's generally assumed that a slow shutter speed (long exposure) is used in nighttime photography as the camera needs more time to collect available light. If your camera is on a tripod or resting on a flat surface, set your shutter speed to a long exposure between 10 and 30 seconds. The greater the exposure time, the more chance there is of blur when photographing a scene containing movement. Long exposure therefore implies a small aperture (high number) as using a large aperture would overexpose the shot. Setting you aperture to f/22 is a reasonable stop for a long exposure.

4. Set the timer. When using a tripod or flat surface, set the timer on your camera to automatically take a picture after five or 10 seconds. The force of your finger pressing the shutter release button is enough to jostle the entire shot into one big blurred mess.

5. Attach a lens hood. Lens hoods help keep out unwanted side light that may leak into the photograph during a long exposure. By using a lens hood you are ensuring that only the light you're photographing makes its way into the photograph.

6. Never use flash. Nighttime flash photos drown the scene and remove all detail. Flash should only be used at night in people situations (such as an outdoor wedding party) when the people and their movement are the main subjects. In these situations a slow shutter speed cannot be used and therefore a flash light source is needed. If using flash, attach a flash diffuser or light box to your flash to soften the beam and create a more natural lighting effect.

Night vision technology has been in use for approximately 30 years and is largely used by military forces for tactical operations. The most basic night vision scope utilizes ambient light sources, such as starlight or moonlight, and amplifies the light to be utilized by the human eye. On more advanced NV models, a light generation device is utilized, such as infrared, to project an "invisible" light that is then redirected to the eye. Looking through a night vision scope is much the same as looking through a standard scope, but, for proper focus, the eye must be adjusted well to darkness prior to looking through the scope.

Instructions

1. Wait approximately 30 minutes outside in the dark prior to using the scope. The human eye takes about this long to adjust to the absence of light. Looking through the scope right away will cause the image to appear fuzzy, and focusing will be much harder.

2. Turn the scope on and place your eye against the eyepiece. With handheld scopes, the scope should be placed directly onto the skin surrounding the eye. For rifle mounted scopes, look through the scope about one or two inches away from the eyepiece.

3. Pan around the area, looking through the scope until you see movement. Once you see movement, try to focus the scope for clarity. All models of night vision vary in focusing mechanics, but typically, focusing is done by turning a knob on the top or side of the scope.

1. Turn the Tivo Series 2 on. The home screen, also known as TIVO Central, displays a menu list of items. Select "Messages and Setup" from the menu. If you have unread messages, this selection may display "Read New Messages and Setup."

Screen Options

4. At the end of the charge cycle, remove the batteries from the charger. Insert the batteries into a device that you commonly use. Power on the device to make sure that the batteries are charged.

1. Hook up a projector that plays the format of your movies in a dark, sound-proof room that does not echo. Find a screen that does not sway. Hook the projector up to an external speaker and move it as far away from the projector as possible.

2. Play the movie, adjusting picture and sound so that they are as clear and crisp as possible. Eliminate all distractions, such as outside light and extraneous sound and movement.

3. Set up a digital video camera near the movie projector. Place it on a stable tripod so that it does not move. The camera ideally should be just below the projector or just above it. Shooting at an angle to the screen will distort the picture. Frame the video camera so that it captures as much of the movie as possible without including the border.

4. Place an external video camera microphone near the movie projector's external speaker. Experiment with the placement of the microphone so that the sound is clear and not distorted. Again, the speaker and mic should be as far away from the projector as possible to minimize its noise. If possible, place a partition between the projector and speaker.

5. Once you are satisfied with all the settings, stop the projector and start it over from the beginning. Start the video camera recording at the same time. Now leave the room until the movie is finished. When people are present, you risk recording ambient noise. Don't slam the door on your way out.

6. Hook up the digital video camera to a DVD burner and download the recording of the movie reel. The easiest way to do this is in real time. DVD burners with hard drives allow you to set up chapters and make simple edits. Alternatively, you can download the recording into a computer with digital editing software. You can then edit the movie and burn it onto a DVD.

Splice Resistor Wire

A resistor is a component that creates electrical resistance in electronic circuits. The electrical current in a circuit is equal to the voltage divided by the resistance. Resistors have two wire terminals on each side of a semiconductor. In some circuits, resistors may be attached to a circuit on a printed circuit board. However, resistors can also be used between two wires to limit the flow of electricity passing through a circuit. In this case, it is necessary to splice the resistor leads with the wires in the circuit.

Instructions

1. Remove about an inch of rubber sheathing from the ends of both wires that will attach to each end of the resistor. Use the wire strippers to pinch the rubber gently and pull it free to expose the wire underneath.

2. Lay the wire flush against the lead on one end of the resistor.

3. Twist the wire gently around the resistor lead so the two intertwine with each other.

4. Lay the other wire flush against the lead on the other end of the resistor and twist the two together.
