Shorten An Rg6 Quad Shield Coaxial Cable

Having a cable of the right length will make any electronics installation go smoother. While it's certainly worse to have too little cable to reach your components, having too much cable can result in having an excess of cable sitting behind your television or other electronic components. Fortunately, shortening a cable isn't a difficult task.

Instructions

1. Determine the type of connectors you have on your cable. Coaxial cables used for television connections, like the RG-6 cable, are usually terminated with F-type connectors (see Resources). If your application is for something other than television, a variety of other connectors may be used (although this is not common). See Resources for a source for a variety of coaxial connectors.

2. Cut your cable to the length you need. It's best to install the cable first and trim as necessary when you're done. Then cut off the excess you don't require. If your cable already has connectors, obviously you'll have to cut one of them off. But making an omelet does require breaking some eggs, doesn't it?

3. Strip the cable to the specs recommended by the manufacturer for the connectors you'll be using. You'll find these instructions on the packaging or documentation for your new connectors. Exact instructions vary according to the style and brand of connector.

4. Crimp or twist on your new connector. Again, this depends upon what style and brand of connector you'll be using.

Check Email On The Motorola Razr

Email has become a necessary way of communication for most people today. It is the main way that many communicate, and it has provided us so many reasons to use it. However, we cannot be around our computers all the time, which makes checking your email a problem if you need to check it regularly. One way you can get around this is to check your email using your cell phone. Learn to do this, and you will never miss an important message again.

Instructions

1. Press the up button on the directional pad of your cell phone. This pad is located just above the number keypad on your phone. Pressing this button will automatically start to log you onto the Internet from your cell phone. Once you are taken to the main screen, you will be given several options. If you are using Verizon wireless, you will choose the second option, or scroll and highlight the “email” section, and click "OK." If you do not have this option, then scroll to your search function to enter your email service provider.

2. Select the email service provider from the ones listed. The more popular ones will be listed, but if it is not, click the "Search" button. This will allow you to enter the name of your email service provider or enter the full address of the provider. Once you have done this and clicked on the appropriate areas, you should be taken to a log-in screen.

3. Enter your username and password to access your account. Be aware that the mobile version of your email account may not give you all the capabilities that you would normally get on a regular computer. This is due to the fact that your cell phone does not have the software or memory to run such programs. You will, however, be able to scroll and read your current emails. Once you are done, make sure that you have closed all of the emails you wanted to read.

4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, and highlight the “log out” button. Click this button to log out of your email account. Close the Internet access on your phone by simply hitting the “Clear” button or the “End Call” button. You also can respond to emails as well, but it may take much longer, as you will need to enter the letters and numbers using your number keypad.

What Are The Benefits Of Night Vision Goggles

Night vision goggles are available from manufacturers such as ATN, Bushnell, Night Optics and Night Owl. These goggles allow the wearer to clearly see their surroundings, even in complete darkness. Although night vision goggles were developed by the military and not available to civilians, they are currently available for legal use by anyone and can be purchased for as little as $100. Camping enthusiasts will find night vision goggles to be an excellent addition to their camping gear.

Wildlife Observation

One of the greatest benefits of night vision goggles is the ability to observe wildlife without the disturbance of a flashlight. Most animals will become frightened and either flee or be startled when spotted with a light. Night vision goggles allow campers to observe wildlife at night in their natural habitat without the animal noticing. Whether watching deer, raccoons or foxes at night, plenty of interesting animal behavior can be observed.

Fishing

If you plan to fish at night while camping, a set of night vision goggles could be an invaluable addition to your tackle box. Fishing with the aid of night vision goggles allows for extremely quiet, hands-free angling. Flashlights, and the sounds they create, could startle a potential catch. Even a headlamp, while hands free, will not provide the total range of vision you'll experience with night vision goggles.

Campsite Repairs

Often while camping, you'll find yourself needing to make a repair or adjustment to your tent in the middle of night. Night vision goggles will provide a significant help in this process. Difficult repairs will be simplified when you don't have to worry about holding a flashlight. In addition, you'll be able to complete any necessary repairs or tasks without waking up your fellow campers with a bright flashlight.

Bathroom Breaks

At one point or another, every camper is faced with the dreaded situation of having to venture into the woods to use the bathroom at night. With night vision goggles, the process will be much easier. Instead of stumbling into the tree line and tripping over rocks and roots, you'll be able to traverse terrain with ease as if seeing in broad daylight.

Pranks

More mischievous campers will have endless fun with night vision goggles. If you've ever tried to scare or surprise your fellow campers in the middle of the night, you've probably blown your cover early with one false move of your flashlight. Night vision goggles will allow you to stealthily maneuver your campsite and surprise your unsuspecting friends.

Use Uv Filters

UV filters provide a better quality picture and protect your lens from damage.

A UV camera filter is an important accessory in a photographer's arsenal. Natural UV rays from the sun can create blurry images. UV filters help prevent this blur or haze from occurring, among other benefits. UV filters help improve picture contrast and provide added camera lens protection. Fortunately, UV filters are easy to use and to install. On the other hand, these filters can also create lens flare (a minimal color tint), a phenomenon that reduces image quality. Understanding when to use a UV lens may reduce the chance of lens flare from occurring.

Instructions

1. Clean off the inside of the UV filter with a clean, soft towel. This will ensure that there is no dust or debris on the filter before it is placed on the camera. Attach the filter by turning the filter onto the camera lens threads until it is on tightly.

2. Attach the UV filter to your camera on hazy and cloudy days. The unclear sky will cause the UV rays from the sun to be uniformly distributed through the air. This results in the camera film being exposed to larger amount of UV rays than usual and poor color contrast will occur. UV filters will prevent this from happening.

3. Remove the UV filter any time it appears to adversely affect image quality. The most common problem UV filters cause is lens flair, a slight coloring tinge that appears in the film. You have several options if you notice lens flair and have to remove the filter. First, try taking pictures on clear days. You'll have a good chance of getting clear pictures without a filter since UV rays are not uniformly scattered when the sky is clear. Second, purchase a multicoated filter. Multicoated UV filters are able to stave off lens flair and poor color contrast, another problem associated with UV filter use. Third, you may want to consider purchasing a digital camera. Digital photos suffer very little, if at all, from UV rays.

4. Attach a UV filter to your camera during black and white photography only if you need or want the added protection to your front lens. UV rays adversely affect color. This means your black and white photos cannot be affected by the rays and a UV filter will do nothing to improve image quality. The filter will still cover your front lens from dirt, debris and therefore reduce the chances of lens scratches that will adversely affect image quality. Use a UV filter for black and white photography if you want this added protection. The filter provides little benefit outside of physical protection in this situation.

Set A Weather Clock

Weather clocks receive forecasts for 152 locations in the United States. The forecast is beamed from a broadcaster, and you can check coverage for your location using their website (see below). The signal used in weather clocks is the same data seen in domestic refrigerator panel read-outs and stand-alone units. Coverage can periodically be affected by signal availability and strength.

Instructions

1. Select your location on the clock. Press the left and right button on the top of the unit until your location shows on the read-out. The locations are listed alphabetically by state and then by city.

2. Press the "Favorites" button when your location shows on the screen. The location will be stored.

3. Open the battery cover. Adjust the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius as required. Use a small pointed object to press the button marked "F/C" inside the battery compartment.

4. Change the default time zone. Repeatedly press the time zone button until your time zone shows. The clock will display the correct time for your time zone.

5. Close the battery compartment cover and look at the screen. The time and four days of weather forecasts will show. The icons are pretty self-explanatory. You should be able to easily identify sun, rain and other conditions. The high and low temperature forecast will also display, and a "feels like" current reading will show along with the actual temperature and the actual conditions.

Recover Lost Photos From A Camera

Digital cameras are susceptible to human error in ways older cameras are not. It is possible for an individual to accidentally delete a picture from a memory card. When this happens, it does not mean that the picture cannot be retrieved, but a certain process must be followed to attempt to get the picture back. New forms of software have assisted in the picture retrieval process, but it is not guaranteed that the lost picture will be located.

Instructions

1. Remove the memory card from the digital camera as soon as you realize that a photograph has been deleted accidentally. Leave the memory card out of the camera until the photo retrieval process begins. The Disk Doctors website explains that the photo is usually still on the memory card, although accessing it requires some work.

2. Determine how the image was lost to begin the retrieval process. The Disk Doctors website explains that photos can be erased on a memory card because of a button being pushed, an error in the memory card or a hard drive issue. The memory space with the information is still in the memory card as long as it has not been overwritten with more information.

3. Place the memory card back into the digital camera. Hook the camera up to the computer using the USB cable. Turn the camera on and wait for the computer to read the memory card and display options for viewing the files that are saved on the memory card.

4. Open a file on the computer to see if the lost picture is still viewable. If the picture cannot be read by the computer, the individual will need to research and download a software recovery program. There are recovery programs (such as Smart Recovery, PC Inspector and Recuva) that can be downloaded online for free.

5. Locate a software retrieval program and download it onto the computer. The Software Patch website is an example of a website that offers a free download of the Smart Recovery software. Make sure that the memory card is still in the camera and connected to the computer.

6. Open the software recovery program and select the drive where the digital camera memory is stored before beginning the data scanning process. The Disk Doctors website explains that the scan will locate lost data and move it to a designated folder on the computer. Once the scan is complete, the individual can open the folder and see if the picture was located.

Charge Nicad Batteries

NiCad--short for nickel cadmium--refers to a class of rechargeable batteries available in a variety of sizes, including the ever-popular AA and AAA sizes. Unlike the typical alkaline battery, NiCads are formulated to be rechargeable in a common household outlet, making them an eco- and budget-friendly option put to use in everything from video game controllers to remote-controlled cars since their invention in 1949. Knowing keep these batteries charged is key to their performance.

Instructions

1. Make sure the batteries are completely discharged. NiCads perform best when charging from a completely empty state.

2. Check to make sure you have the right kind of charger--NiCad batteries will not charge properly in a charger designed for nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, which are a different formulation. It's important to make sure your charger is capable of handling NiCads because mismatches can cause chemical explosions or fires. Some chargers give the option to support both--in this case, there will be a switch to select NiCads.

3. Choose the speed of your charge time. NiCad batteries charge best over a longer period of time, but some chargers give you the option to accelerate the charge. Over time, this will wear down the life of a battery.

4. Let your batteries charge. This may take as long as 12 hours.

Convert A Hi8 Tape To A Vhs

10-15 years ago, Hi8 cassettes were the staple of compact camcorders. Hi8 8mm cassettes offered higher recording quality and fit smaller handheld video cameras. However, as the Hi8 format has been phased out of the video market, many users want to convert older tapes to the VHS standard format. With devices that support both technologies and a simple cable, users can quickly and easily convert Hi8 tapes to those playable in a VCR.

Instructions

Convert a Hi8 Tape to a VHS

1. Attach the cables to your Hi8 camcorder, plugging one cable into the "Audio Out" jack and one cable into the "Video Out" jack.

2. Turn on your handheld camcorder and VCR.

3. Connect the opposing ends of the cables to your VCR, placing the audio cable in the "Audio In" jack and the video cable in the "Video In" jack.

4. Load a blank VHS tape into your VCR and press the "Rewind" button to ensure you begin at the start of the tape.

5. Load the original Hi8 tape into your camcorder, rewinding first and then pressing the "Play" button to begin the movie.

6. Press the "Record" button on your VCR.

7. Press the "Stop" buttons on the VCR and Hi8 recorders once the original tape has finished playing.

8. Eject your VHS tape from your VCR and label it.

Define Tty

TTY stands for teletypewriter or Text Telephone. A TTY machine allows people with different disabilities to make phone calls.

Identification

During a conversation, with a TTY machine, you type your message rather than talk. The TTY machine then uses a telephone line to relay the typed message, which can be read by the person you are calling, using a second TTY machine.

Benefits

The TTY machine allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing or suffering from speech difficulties to make and receive phone calls.

Features

Like texting, TTY users rely on abbreviations for common phrases, such as SK for "stop-keying," or goodbye.

Equipment

The TTY machine uses the handset from a regular telephone placed on the base of the TTY machine. When a TTY machine rings in the homes of deaf or hearing-impaired people, a flashing light notifies them.

Considerations

To use a TTY machine, both parties must have a TTY machine; however, Telecommunications Relay Service is an alternative that allows you to use a TTY machine to talk to an operator who in turn speaks your message to the person you wish to call who does not have a TTY machine.

Why Won'T My Canon 50d Telephoto Lens Focus

Telephoto lenses allow you to shoot subjects at long distances.

The Canon 50D is a high-end digital SLR camera. It features a 15.1 megapixel CMOS image sensor, Canon's Digic 4 image processor and 3-inch LCD screen. The camera can be used with a slew of interchangeable lenses ranging from wide-angle to telephoto. If you are having trouble focusing a shot while using a telephoto lens, there are several things you can troubleshoot to get clearer images.

Auto Focus

All lenses include an auto focus switch that allows you to toggle between automatic focus and manual focus. If the switch is set to "AF," the camera will automatically focus on your subject when you press the shutter button halfway down. If the switch is set to "MF," then you can use the focus ring on the lens to manually adjust the focus yourself. Try both of these methods to get a focus on your subject.

Image Stabilizer

Most lenses also include an image stabilizer function. This mode helps to stabilize the image for handheld shots to allow you to shoot better focused shots of moving subjects and in low light. Enable the image stabilizer by setting the IS switch to "ON" and set the stabilizer mode switch to Mode 1 for low light or Mode 2 for moving objects. If possible, use a tripod to eliminate camera shake from handheld movements.

Lens Zoom

Depending on how much you are zoomed in, your camera may have difficulty achieving auto focus. Try zooming all the way out to see if the auto focus will work. Otherwise, zoom all the way in to your subject and manually adjust the focus until the image is sharp, then zoom back to your shooting position.

Low Light

If your subject is too dark or too low contrast, then the camera may have trouble achieving auto focus. If this is the case, try focusing on a better lit or high-contrast object that is at the same distance as your subject. You can also use the manual focus to set the focus yourself.

Use An Omega B22 Enlarger

Making your own black and white prints can be a rewarding hobby. The Omega B22 enlarger is one type of essential equipment that you can use to make prints, and the following instructions cover its basics of its operation. Many devotees of the time-honored art of darkroom printing keep the practice alive because they appreciate that photography before the digital age was essentially rooted in the manipulation of light, as opposed to processing a bunch of invisible ones and zeros.

Instructions

1. Insert the lens (mounted on a lens board) you plan to use in the space immediately below the condenser lamphouse. Be sure the condensers are appropriate to the focal length of the lens you are using. For lenses with a 3-inch or greater focal length (used for 6cm by 6cm negatives) the standard double condensers will do, but for lenses with 2-inch or smaller focal lengths (for 35mm negatives) you will need to install a supplementary condenser.

2. Place the negative in the negative carrier emulsion side down and insert the carrier into the enlarger by raising the lamphouse slightly with the lever provided for this purpose. The negative carrier should be pushed to the rear of the Omega B22's negative stage, where it will come to rest against retaining pins. When the lamphousing is lowered, the negative carrier will be held securely.

3. Place a white piece of paper on the easel and turn on the enlarger lamp. After loosening the knurled screw that holds the projector carriage at one position on the column, raise or lower the carriage until you are satisfied with the magnification, and then tighten the screw.

4. Now focus the image by turning the hand wheel located on the right side of the enlarger. Sharp focus is more easily obtained with a focus aid, which lets you focus on the grain of the film.

5. Before exposing the photographic paper, make sure there is no stray white light (sunlight, incandescent or fluorescent)---the only light in the darkroom at this stage should be from an approved safelight. Place the paper on the easel after turning off the enlarger lamp and set the darkroom timer to the desired exposure, after which the print will need to be developed.

Hook Up A Direc Tv Satellite

One additional task that comes with having Direc TV or any other satellite television provider is needing to install the dish antenna itself. Most Direc TV subscription packages include free professional installation, so doing it yourself is rarely needed. If you choose to install the dish yourself, you must make sure it is in the right location, the mast is securely mounted and the cables are grounded.

Instructions

1. Find an appropriate location for the satellite dish to stand. An unobstructed view of the southern sky is the mot important factor, so make sure there are no large tree branches or other obstacles hanging directly in view of the the dish.

2. Connect the dish's reflector to the support arm, and the arm to the dish. The exact tools used can vary if the dish came with a metal, plastic or Sony reflector, but it generally involves placing bolts through holes in the reflector and arm and securing them with nuts. The dish should include a hardware kit that includes the exact bolts and nuts used.

3. Set the elevation of the dish so it will receive the best signal. The elevation should be set somewhere between 30 degrees (if you live in the north) and 60 degrees (for southern locations). If you have already connected the satellite receiver box to your TV set inside, you can access a menu on the screen that gives you the precise azimuth (or side direction) and elevation (vertical angle) coordinates for setting the dish.

4. Choose a spot to mount the dish's mast. You can mount it against wood, brick or cement, as long as you have the proper drill and bit for the particular material. Drill holes in the surface (3/16 inch for wood, 1/2 inch for brick/cement) that will line up with the mounting foot's four corner holes. Place the mast over the holes and secure it with 5/16-by-2 inch lag screws (for wood) or the enclosed machine screws (brick/cement).

5. Install the low noise block, the cylindrical device that attaches to the reflector. Run your coaxial cable up through the mast and LNB support arm and connect it to the LNB. Attach the LNB to its support arm and secure it with a Phillips-head screw and hex retaining nut.

6. Mount your grounding wire to the foot of the mast using the enclosed grounding bolt, nut and star washer. Find a location to mount the grounding block. Some good ground points include a cold water pipe within 5 feet of where it enters your building or an 8-foot-high grounding rod that is firmly planted in the ground. Connect the ground wire and coaxial cable to the block, then connect the block to your chosen grounding location with a Number 8 aluminum or Number 10 copper wire.

7. Connect another length of coaxial cable to the grounding block and the receiver box with the TV. You will likely need to drill a hole in your house for the cable to enter it.

Convert Lenses To A Canon Ef

Canon SLR (single lens reflex) cameras have two types of lens mounts: EF and EF-S. EF-S lenses are designed to fit smaller SLR cameras with smaller digital sensors and feature a protruding back element that makes the lens fit only EF-S mounts. While an EF-S mount can hold both EF and EF-S lenses, EF mounts can hold only EF lenses. However, you can convert EF-S lenses to fit into an EF mount. Only do this with small frame Canon SLRs such as the 10D and 20D, as full-frame cameras like the 1D have a larger mirror that will collide with EF-S lenses if they are mounted on the cameras.

Instructions

1. Remove the four screws that hold the lens mount. These screws are on the back of the lens--the part that attaches to the camera--and are the only screws at the center of the mount. The screws are affixed with a light glue, so it may take a bit of pressure to remove them.

2. Remove the mount by carefully sliding the screwdriver between the mount and the rest of the lens and slowly prying the mount off. Although the four screws primarily held the mount, there is also a light glue that adheres the mount to the lens.

3. Unscrew the single, raised screw near the electrical contacts at the back of the lens.

4. Lift the rest of the lens mount slightly until you can see four plastic clips that hold the mount in place. Carefully insert your screwdriver between the lens mount and the lens itself and manipulate the clips until they release the mount. This mount makes the lens physically unable to fit into an EF lens mount, and when it is removed, the lens will fit into an EF mount like a standard EF lens.

Repair Tips For A Thomson Rca Tv

Thomson purchased the RCA electronics brand in 1987; previously, RCA had been responsible for manufacturing a range of consumer electronics, including TVs and radios. Remedy problems with many Thomson RCA TVs by examining connections and adjusting menu options where required. If doing so doesn't fix the TV, leave the job to a professional.

Black and White Pictures

RCA Thomson sets sometimes display images in black and white instead of color. If you have an older set that uses an antenna for broadcasts, try adjusting its position to see if color is restored. An antenna that's receiving a weak signal can result in sound distortion and colorless images.

Change the picture settings via your RCA Thomson remote control by pressing the "Menu" button, followed by the Picture Quality option. You can now adjust color range, contrast and brightness, which may remedy the problem. Thomson RCA sets that continue to display black and white images may require a factory reset. Press the "Cancel" or "Reset" button on your Thomson remote to restore your TV's original settings. You can also select the "Reset" option while changing the picture settings, notes the RCA Customer Support website.

Buzzing Noise

RCA Thomson sets may produce a buzzing or humming sound. This is usually a problem with new plasma sets, and is caused by the set warming up to its regular operating temperature. When the TV is properly warmed up, the noise should disappear completely. However, noise problems may reoccur depending on where you position your set. Thomson plasma sets that are placed in particularly warm rooms are liable to produce the humming noise. Try drawing the drapes or increasing air conditioning levels to remedy the issue. Sets that are mounted on walls may also emit a humming noise. Place your set nearer to ground levels and the problem should cease.

Widescreen Ratio

Some Thomson RCA widescreen sets display black bars at the sides of broadcast images. This is usually due to a discrepancy between the aspect ratio of the set when compared to the broadcast on screen. Most shows are broadcast in a standard aspect ratio of 4:3. Widescreen sets are designed for images displayed in a ratio of 16:9, resulting in the image being squared off during standard-definition broadcasts. You can adjust the aspect ratio on most Thomson RCA sets by pressing the "Menu" option, followed by "Picture Settings." The RCA Customer Support website advises users to contact the company directly if the problem cannot be fixed via the Menu options, as there may be a technical fault.

Use A Video Camera As A Web Cam

You can use a video camera as a web cam.

Most people think that you need a separate web cam in order to have video chats online. This is generally true, but there are are several pieces of software that allow you to use your video camera as a web cam. There is a twofold advantage, because you save money and you also get superior video quality.

Instructions

1. Check out WebcamDV, a program that converts your video camera into a web cam video and audio stream. The software works with all popular chat applications, including MSN messenger, Skype and AOL messenger.

2. Try out DVDriver, a web cam utility that reconfigures your windows webcam driver into thinking that your firewire-connected video camera is actually a USB-connected webcam. Your video camera will show up as a USB web cam in your chat application.

3. Take a look at ActiveWebcam if you are thinking about using your video camera web cam for surveillance purposes, as the software is designed mainly for security operations. The software allows you to record from multiple cameras and contains many other features, such as allowing connections with analog cameras and network IP cameras.

Create Morph With Flash

Use Flash color morphing techniques to create dazzling virtual sunrises.

Morphing, or transforming the shape or color, of an object is a technique that is used in professional video game design. When an object such as an alien spaceship explodes, morphing techniques can be used to transform the object into a ball of flames. The expansion of a balloon or the flattening of a tire are two more examples where morphing can reduce the work needed to make animations. With Flash, shape and color morphing is made easy with its built-in tweening function. This function includes automated interpolation, which reduces the number of drawings needed for morphing.

Instructions

1. Start the Flash program. Click "Flash File (ActionScript 3.0)" from the splash window to create a new file for your Flash animation project.

2. Click the "Designer" option from the Workspace menu within the Window menu to display the Flash drawing tools and color swatch panels. Click "Timeline" in the Window menu to display the timeline panel.

3. Press the "O" key on your keyboard to activate the Flash Oval tool. Position your mouse cursor over the stage and click and drag your mouse to draw an oval. Click a color in the color swatch panel to change the color of the oval.

4. Press and release the "." (period) key repeatedly to move to Frame 50 on the timeline. Click in Frame 50, right-mouse and select "Insert Keyframe" on the context menu.

5. Click in Frame 49. Click on a different color in the color swatch panel to change the color of the oval again (the color to which it will morph).

6. Click in any frame between 2 and 49, then right-mouse and select "Create Shape Tween" from the context menu.

7. Click "Test Movie" from the Control menu to play the color morphing Flash movie. Observe that the color of the oval changes in a gradual or color gradient type fashion from the initial color of the oval (at Frame 1) to the color selected for Frame 50.

The Fastest & Best Actionshot Digital Cameras

Make action photography fun instead of frustrating with the right camera.

If you're taking photographs of fast-moving action --- such as sports, wildlife or children playing --- you want a digital camera that can keep up with you. Depending on your needs and price range, digital cameras of all sizes and from all major manufacturers offer continuous shooting and bracketing burst modes. Camera makers are constantly introducing new models, so if the cameras listed below aren't available, look for newer versions in the same line.

Pocket-Sized Cameras

Often called point-and-shoots, these digital cameras will fit in a pocket or purse. Some are "idiot-proof," and others are surprisingly sophisticated. They range in price from $100 to $400 or more and are ideal for busy families. For shooting kids, school sports and other action photography, shop for a camera with an optical viewfinder that you look through instead of just an LCD you look at. Viewfinders make it easier to follow the action. Image stabilization is another must-have feature to reduce blurry photos. Check out the Panasonic Lumix FX700, Casio Exilim EX-FC100, Sony DSC WX1 and the Canon PowerShot SD970 IS.

Compact Cameras

Compact digital cameras are a bridge between pocket-sized cameras and full-sized DSLRs. They look like a "real" camera and can perform as well as a DSLR, but they have built-in rather than interchangeable lenses, making them more convenient and affordable. The lack of lenses doesn't have to compromise flexibility, though; "superzooms" of 10x or greater are popular in this category. Compact cameras cost around $500, plus or minus a hundred bucks. Explore the Olympus SP-800UZ, Panasonic DMC-FZ45, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, Nikon Coolpix P100, Canon PowerShot SX30IS and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1.

Digital SLRs

If you want the ultimate in speed, performance and flexibility --- and you can handle the price tag, size and weight --- a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera is for you. DSLRs are distinguished from other cameras by their bigger sensors and interchangeable lenses. Simple models start around $600, but DSLRs can cost upwards of $5,000. You'll also need to take into consideration the additional expense of lenses -- and fast lenses can get pricey. Be sure to invest in a fast flash card, too. For action photography, look for DSLRs with continuous shooting speeds of at least six to 10 frames per second. But consider other variables, too, like shutter speed, autofocus speed, maximum ISO and buffer size. You'll want to compare the Canon EOS 5D Mark II (used by official White House photographer Pete Souza, and with good reason -- it's fast), the Canon EOS 7D, the Olympus E-3 (billed as having the fastest autofocus), the Nikon D3S and D300, and the Pentax K-X.

Dub A Camcorder Recording To Dvd

Dub a Camcorder Recording to DVD

Do you have great video footage stuck on your camcorder? Video footage isn't much good if you can't watch it. In order to watch your productions you first have to dub the camcorder recording onto a DVD. Although the process may seem highly technical, after doing it a couple of times you will soon find yourself producing box-office hits in no time at all.

Instructions

1. Start by connecting the camcorder to your computer using a USB cable. Insert one end into the camcorder's USB portal (usually a small square opening) and the other into your computer's USB portal (usually a narrow rectangle located on the front of the tower or side of a laptop).

2. Once connected, turn the camcorder on. Your computer's DVD rewrite program should automatically prompt. If not, locate it in your Programs file and double click to select. If your computer does not have a DVD rewrite program or drive, you will have to purchase one. Most camcorders now come with the needed rewrite software and most computers now have a built in DVD rewrite drive (usually labeled "DVD Rom").

3. The program will ask you to select the recording you wish to copy into the reading drive. On the pull-down menu, select "camcorder." This will download the video recording from your camcorder and onto the computer program.

4. Next you will be asked to select the device you wish to have the recording dubbed onto. Select "blank DVD." This tells the computer that you want it to send the recording from the camcorder directly onto the DVD and not store it on the computer's hard drive.

5. Open the DVD-Rom drive and insert your blank DVD. Once properly placed, close the DVD-Rom drive's tray.

6. The program will next ask whether you wish to copy the recording directly to the DVD. Select "write directly to disc."

7. Before the recording is transferred you will be asked to create a name for the DVD. Type in the name and select OK.

8. The final step is to select "Burn." This will cause your computer to transfer the recording from your camera and onto the DVD. When the process is complete, the DVD-Rom drive will open automatically. Remove your personal DVD and enjoy.

Download Ringers Using The Usb Cord

People are proud of their ringtones. Often people let their cell phones ring away, playing loud songs for thirty seconds or more before they answer the calls. If you're tired of the ringers that came with your cell phone, you can use mp3 music files stored on your computer to replace them. With a USB data cable and cell phone synchronization software, you can move music from your computer to your cell phone in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

1. Purchase cell phone synchronization software from your cell phone manufacturer, an electronics store or on the Internet. Manufacturers and electronics stores often have synch software available with USB cables.

2. Install the software on your computer and start it up.

3. Connect the USB data cable to your cell phone and your computer and and turn the cell phone on. Allow the synchronization software to recognize your cell phone. With some synch programs, you may have to manually enter your cell phone information, however, the procedure won't take long to do. Once the cell phone is recognized, the files contained on it will appear on-screen in directories for music, photos and videos.

4. Use the synch software to open the folder on your computer that contains the music you want to transfer to your cell phone for use as a ringtone. Select the songs you want to move. You can normally select multiple copies.

5. Click on the "transfer" command (this may not necessarily be the exact command, but it will be something similar), or you may be able to drag the files you want to transfer to the appropriate folder on your cell phone.

6. Allow the transfer to finish. There will usually be a prompt to tell you that the transfer is complete. Disconnect the cell phone. Open the folder where you keep ringtones or music on your phone and confirm that the files are there.

7. Designate the files as ringtones.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Dead Dv Camcorder Battery

Unless you have access to AC power in any situation, having a charged camcorder battery is critical to the ability to record video in many situations, such as your child's school play or soccer game. Most camcorders come with a rechargeable lithium ion battery that is good for an hour's worth of recording; often, you can also buy an extended life battery good for anywhere from three to seven hours of recording. However, batteries do eventually wear out.

Initial Symptoms

It is hard to initially tell when a camcorder battery is starting to die, but one of the most common symptoms is decreased recording time. If you think you have a fully charged battery, but can only record for 30 minutes, the battery may be in the process of dying. However, in these situation, it may be possible that you didn't charge the battery enough; you may have also used it under power-draining conditions, such as cold weather. Therefore, it is important to start to track how much recording time you are getting from each charge.

Battery Bar

Most camcorders have a battery bar in the viewfinder that will tell you how much your battery is charged. If the charger is green and indicates your battery is fully charged, but it doesn't show full strength upon putting it into the camcorder, your battery may be starting to die.

False Charging

False charging can be another symptom of a dead battery. If you leave the battery on the charger overnight, but don't get a decent amount of time recording once you've re-inserted it into the camcorder, it is time to replace the battery.

Don't Overcharge

Don't try to overcharge your batteries; remove them from the charger when the charger says they are charged. Leaving them on to try to maintain the charge, or to give what is a dying battery a full charge, can damage both the battery and charger.

Checking Death

At a certain point, the camcorder battery simply won't charge. When this happens, replace it. If you are unsure of whether or not this is the case for your situation, plug in the camcorder to your AC power. If it still works, but the battery still won't turn it on, then the battery is dead. The one caveat to this is that sometimes, rarely, a charger will go bad, so if you get a new battery, charge it and then it doesn't work, the charger is probably bad.

Metrogel Application Directions

If you have rosacea, your doctor may write you a prescription for MetroGel.

MetroGel is a topical prescription medication used to treat skin conditions, such as rosacea and the acne associated with rosacea. The medication's active ingredient, metronidazole, is an antibiotic. To help reduce the swelling and redness of rosacea, it is important to follow the application instructions for MetroGel closely for best results. And in about three to nine weeks, you should see improvement in your skin.

Instructions

1. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing or if you are planning a pregnancy, before using MetroGel. It is also important that you tell your doctor what other medications you are using -- both prescription and over-the-counter drugs -- as well as any allergies you have, before adding this medication to your regimen.

2. Wash your hands and dry them before beginning. You will also need to wash your hands again after handling MetroGel.

3. Cleanse your face before treating it with MetroGel. It is important to let your skin dry thoroughly, for about 15 minutes, before applying the medication.

4. Place a small amount of MetroGel on your finger. Using your fingers, apply the medication to your face in a thin, even layer.

5. Use other cosmetic preparations only after you have allowed the MetroGel to dry completely on your skin. Waiting approximately 5 minutes is a good rule of thumb.

6. Apply this medication on a consistent, regular basis to obtain the best results. Following a regular schedule for use -- such as in the morning and before you go to bed -- may help you to avoid missing doses of MetroGel.

Convert 8mm To Dvd At Home

Convert 8mm to DVD at Home

Many people think that backing up their old 8mm home movies to DVD is a lengthy and expensive process that is well beyond their means. They think they have to take their films to a professional business and pay hundreds of dollars just to ensure their home movies don't disintegrate over time. This is, of course, not true. By using a standard camcorder and your DVD drive, you can quickly and easily make a digital copy of your favorite memories that will stand the test of time and last forever.

Instructions

1. Project your 8mm film onto either a clean screen or a white wall using a normal 8mm projector. Make sure everything is in focus and running smoothly. The smoother, cleaner and whiter the surface you project onto is, the better the digital copy of your film is going to be.

2. Take your digital camcorder and place it on a tripod directly in front of the surface you're going to project your 8mm film onto. You can put your camcorder onto any flat surface, but a tripod is ideal as it allows you to adjust your angle smoothly and easily. Make sure the camcorder is focused (just because your film is being projected in focus doesn't mean your camcorder is recording in focus) and white balanced (the process of defining the color white to your camera, which affects the way it processes all colors) before you continue.

3. Record your film from start to finish using your camcorder. Line up your camcorder perfectly so you both aren't losing any picture information but you also can't see anything around the projection surface. Running a few quick tests to make sure everything is adjusted properly may be necessary to get things perfect.

4. Capture the raw video data from your camcorder to your computer. From here you can use any standard DVD burning software to burn the digital copy of your 8mm film to DVD. Depending on the quality of your software, you can also add features like music or enhance the overall picture quality by changing colors. When you are completely satisfied with your digital copy, burn it to a DVD for use in any standard DVD player or drive.

Charge An Audiovox Pvd73 Battery

It's important to keep your portable DVD player charged so that it can be used.

Your Audiovox PVD73 portable DVD player comes with an internal battery that you can charge whenever it begins to lose power. The DVD player can be used while either plugged into an outlet or on the go, running completely on battery power. The battery included is rechargeable, so it has a longer shelf life than the typical disposable battery purchased in stores. Make sure that it is charged indoors at room temperature to get the most life out of your battery.

Instructions

1. Turn the DVD player off by pressing the power switch located on the side of the unit. The battery charges faster if the DVD player is not in use at the time of the charge.

2. Plug the input part of the AC power cord into the circular outlet located in the back of the DVD player. Plug the other end of the power cord into a free outlet.

3. Close the screen lid of the DVD player so that it isn't accidentally damaged and so that power is conserved.

4. Take note of the power light on the side of the player. When charging, the light glows a solid red. This is the same light that blinks red when indicating a near-dead battery. If your light is solid red, let it sit and allow the power outlet to provide power to the player and recharge the battery.

5. Wait a few hours while the battery charges. After letting it sit, check the power light again. If the light is now glowing a solid greenish yellow, then the player is adequately charged and ready for use.

Install 2 Amps In A Car

If you're powering more than one subwoofer or looking to power subwoofers and your regular speakers, you may need more than one amplifier. While you will need to seriously consider adding capacitors or even a second battery (for amplifiers that do not overly exert your car battery), you can still connect two amps using a standard amplifier kit and other materials. This will still take slightly more work than installing one but is not as intensive as it may seem.

Instructions

1. Find a hole in the heat shield between the inside of your car and under the hood. If you cannot find an existing hole on the side near the battery, you can drill a hole just large enough for the amplifier kit power wire to fit through. Also, loosen the door trim inside the car on both sides so that you can feed wires back underneath the paneling and trim.

2. Feed the amplifier kit power wire---using the end that does not have the fuse box---through the hole in the heat shield and under the carpet to the paneling on the side of the car. Continue feeding the wire back until it reaches the backseat. Feed the wire under the backseat and locate a path to the trunk. You may have to lift the backseat to find an opening. Feed the wire to the trunk.

3. Connect the RCA wires to your receiver. If you are using both amps for the same thing, you can run one RCA to the back of the car and use Y-adapters to split the signal in the trunk. If you are going to use them for different signals---or if you are planning to use a four-channel amplifier---connect multiple RCA wires to the preamp outputs on your receiver. Run these wires straight down from the console and cut a small hole to feed them under the carpet.

4. Run any RCAs to the side of the car opposite of the power wire. Run the wires under the paneling and trim to the backseat. Feed the RCAs back to the trunk. Make sure you can tell which RCA goes to which output---the outputs will be marked at the receiver. Color coding should help you keep right and left connectors separate.

5. Connect the remote wire from the amplifier kit to the remote wire from the receiver. This wire is often blue; if it isn't, check the manual for your receiver to determine which color to look for. Solder the wires together or twist and use electric tape. Run the wire through the same hole as the RCA wires in the carpet. Feed the wire to the same side as the power wire. Continue to run the remote wire alongside the power wire to the trunk.

6. Solder one end of the amplifier kit ground wire and one end of your extra ground wire to the frame of your trunk. You will need to pull up a corner of the carpet in order to do this. Simply push the carpet back down when you are done.

7. Connect the end of the power wire to the power supply terminal on the distributor block. Tighten this connection with a screwdriver (or hex tool if your block uses one). Cut your additional power wire into two equal pieces---long enough to reach the amplifiers. Connect one end of each piece to the distributor block and tighten the connection.

8. Connect the RCA ends to the appropriate amplifier. On some amps---if being used for the same signal---you can connect one RCA pair to the amplifier and connect the second amp by using an RCA output on the first amp.

9. Connect a power wire to each amplifier. Tighten the terminal connection using a screwdriver. You will need to cut two lengths of remote wire. Connect these two pieces to the remote wire by twisting them together and using electric tape or by soldering. Because the remote connection does not need to be strong, as long as the wires maintain contact there will not normally be a problem. Connect the two ends to the remote terminals on the amplifiers.

10. Connect your speakers. If you are connecting subwoofers consider bridging connections on your amplifier. Use the provided speaker wire and connect the wires to the speakers themselves or to an enclosure that is wired to the speakers.

11. Connect the ground wires to the amplifiers. While you can do this prior to connecting the speakers, it is always good practice to connect ground wires last.

12. Make sure the fuse is not in the fuse box. Connect the ring terminal on the end of the speaker wire to the battery terminal by removing the terminal nut. Place the ring over the bolt and replace the nut.

13. Connect the battery. Attach the positive connection first. Then secure the negative terminal.

14. Turn the car power on and make sure everything is functioning properly. If so, turn off the car and insert the fuse into the fuse box. Secure the lid on the fuse box. Start the car and test your stereo. After you are sure everything is working tighten the door trim and make sure to put the heat protective coiling on the power wire under the hood.

What Is A Ptz Camera

PTZ, or pan, tilt and zoom cameras can make a 360-degree sweep of the environment, change angles to look at objects both above and below the camera, and zoom in to give objects greater detail. These cameras are used most often in surveillance situations where remote viewers can track subjects.

Definition

PTZ stands for Pan, Zoom and Tilt. This refers to the capabilities of automated cameras and video recorders. Essentially, a PTZ camera is set in a particular place, but has the ability to turn, usually in a complete circle, tilt at different angles both up and down, and zoom in on particular objects.

Construction

PTZ cameras are controlled via remote computer systems. Users generally program the camera to move it in a set pattern, or control it manually with an interface that usually is manipulated with a keyboard. A user inputs commands, degrees of angle and rotation and the camera moves accordingly. Advanced PTZ cameras may have controls with joysticks or other customized controls.

Because the PTZ camera needs to be completely mobile, the camera itself usually has a sphere design. Either the camera itself--the lens and sensor mechanism--is structured in the shape of a sphere and held so it can pivot as desired, or the camera has a more traditional design and is place in a protective, spherical bubble where it can pan, tilt and zoom and make its recording through the shield.

Features

Extra features and recording capabilities of a PTZ camera can vary. Some PTZ cameras have high-definition capabilities, allowing them to record very detailed images. Others may have only standard definition. Color and grayscale options also vary. The camera may also have tinted shielding so people can't see it and internal heating or maintenance mechanisms to keep it running smoothly.

Benefits

Because PTZ cameras can be controlled from a distance, the user does not need to be near the camera. After the PTZ camera is installed, it is generally low-maintenance and requires little attention, except in the case of malfunctions or required cleaning. The mobility of the camera allows users to track an object as it is moving, following it as long as it is within the camera's range.

Uses

PTZ cameras are used primarily in surveillance. They can be bought by private parties for home surveillance. They are more common for businesses, military and law enforcement agencies for surveying products or public areas.

What Are Endoscopes Used For

Endoscopes are used to examine the inside of your body. An endoscope consists of a flexible tube that is fitted with a camera and light. At times, an endoscope can be fitted with special instruments to perform specific procedures that include looking for signs of cancer or performing a biopsy.

Biopsies

Performing a biopsy skips the need for surgery.

According to Medical News Today, the most common use for endoscopies is in the detection of cancer. An endoscope can perform delicate procedures without the need for surgery. For example, an endoscope can be inserted into your lungs to extract lung tissue without needing to open up your chest.

Upper Digestive System

An endoscope can examine medical conditions pertaining to your esophagus, stomach and your small intestine (or duodenum). If you suffer from chronic nausea and vomiting, your physician can use an endoscope to determine the cause of your illness. An endoscope can even be used to treat problems of your digestive tract such as bleeding within your stomach or the removal of polyps.

Palliative Treatment

According to the American Cancer Society, endoscopes can be used in the treatment of cancer. Pain associated with cancer that has progressed beyond treatment methods can be alleviated with the use of an endoscope. Blockages can be removed and constricted airways can be opened with the use of an endoscope.

Surgery

An endoscope can be used in surgical procedures.

Endoscopes can help in the assistance of surgeries. An endoscope can be used during a tubal ligation, when the fallopian tubes are tied. Small tumors can be removed. A gallbladder can also be removed with the assistance of an endoscope.

Imaging

Endoscopes can be used in imaging testing. In an ultrasound, a transducer (a wand) is placed over the skin to pick up an image. With an endoscope, the transducer is placed on the end of the endoscope and inserted either into your mouth and into your digestive tract or into your rectum. The endoscope can then take detailed images of organs and tumors.

Wide Angle Lens Tips

Most people tend to think that telephoto lenses are the most useful for photography, but the truth is, they have limited appeal unless you are shooting a sporting event or long-distance candids. Wide-angle lenses, however, open a new vista for the photographer, offering different perspectives on the world. Here are some tips for using them.

Basics

Wide-angle lenses have gotten wider over the years without the distortion previously typical of them. The Canon 8 mm fisheye lens once displayed in the Eastman Kodak museum in Rochester, New York, gave the photographer a very wide angle, but everything was distorted, rounded into semi-circles. The fisheye wide-angle lens has limited uses. Advances in optics took the standard wide-angle lens down from 28 mm to 24 mm, and now with digital, 10 mm to 18 mm are possible. Of course, that number is multiplied by 1.5 for most digital cameras, but that still means the widest lenses run from 15 mm to 27 mm without much, if any, distortion. The field of view allows you to gather all the members of a large family into one portrait and also allows stunning landscapes.

Perspectives

Wide-angle lenses appear to push everything back and away from the camera. Use this to gather more into the scene. Another technique is to place a person to one side of a stunning scene, with the majority of the frame filled by the main subject. For example, you can get a good perspective on the size of the Grand Canyon and add the feeling of contemplation by having a friend or even the tour guide on the right of the image with the expanse of the canyon itself spread out across the rest of the frame.

Different Angles

Get close and try different angles. For example, if you put the lens to its closest focus near a gravestone, that stone will appear huge with the rest of the cemetery behind it spreading back to infinity. Another idea is to turn the camera vertical. This turns the wide expanse into a vertical shot, such as at the base of the Empire State Building looking up. You also can set the wide-angle lens and shoot from the hip. With a focal length of 18 mm or smaller, just point the camera in the general direction of your subjects and shoot. This may seem simple, but it is a good way to capture unposed shots of people and to get a different perspective on your scenes.

Make A Homemade Portrait Studio

The most important aspect of a homemade portrait studio is the ability to satisfy your clients. There is no specific number of backdrops or props needed, but remember that you will attract more business and create more satisfied clients if they have more say in how their portraits will look.

Instructions

1. Find or create a space large enough to comfortably contain several people, plus room to move around lighting and camera equipment.

2. Hang backdrops on a wall or use backdrop stands to support them. A studio wall can also be painted to use as a backdrop.

3. Position lights to adequately illuminate the area in front of the backdrops. Use a main light to illuminate the subject. A fill light is usually positioned opposite the main light to reduce or remove heavy shadows. A back light, which illuminates the area between the subject and the backdrop, provides depth and controls shadow behind the subject.

4. Set a tripod up in your studio to support any camera you might want to use. Lighting techniques for portraits sometimes require that your camera is stable, in order to prevent blurring in situations where low light or slow shutter speed may be needed.

5. Make several props available for clients to use in their portraits. Props vary, depending on the age of the subject and reason for the portrait, but normally include chairs and objects for support, as well as theme-based props, such as sports equipment and seasonal or holiday-related objects.

6. Keep an assortment of toys for younger children. Diversions will keep them calm, as well as prevent stress for both the photographer and the family. Stuffed animals work as comfort objects and puppets can be used by a photographer to attract an infant's attention at the time the photo is taken.

Use Expired Film

Expired film can help you test different aspects of outdoor and indoor photography.

Expired film is commonly thrown out with the trash. Many people believe expiration dates on film mean that pictures will not come out clear or paper will be blank. This is simply not true. Expired film is excellent for picture experimentation, helping create different hue saturation and grade appearances. Expired film is not used for important, professional-quality photographs, but it can help you devise a photography style all your own, while giving you an understanding of how film processing works.

Instructions

1. Freeze your expired film until you are ready to use it. This prevents the film from degrading and becoming unusable. Defrost your film at room temperature for one to two hours before loading it into your camera. Expired film can be thawed and refrozen, if needed.

2. Purchase or use expired film that is used for slower camera speeds. These films tend to have a higher preservation rate than quicker camera speed films. For example, a 35mm film will last longer than a 220mm film.

3. Avoid harsh lighting when shooting your pictures. This will only enhance any problems your film already has. You may end up with unsightly flares or distortions. Experiment with different lighting sources to find your ideal setting.

4. Shoot expired film immediately after removing it from its packaging. The risk of exposing the unused film is greater in expired products. This could cause blank prints once the film is processed.

Record Digital Tv To A Dvd

Record Digital TV to a DVD

Digital television broadcasts can be saved on DVDs. You can connect the digital television transmission source to a video capture card, and a program on your computer allows you to record the video transmission to your computer's hard drive. Then you can use a DVD burning program to save the digital video file to a blank DVD. If you receive digital television broadcasts using a set top digital television receiver, you can connect this to the video capture card. If you receive digital transmissions directly, connect the antenna cable directly to your capture card.

Instructions

1. Connect the antenna to the antenna input connector on the video capture card fitted in your computer. If you are using a set top digital receiver, connect a cable to the receiver's output connector, then connect that cable to the capture card.

2. Install the television capture program that came with your capture card, on your computer, if you have not already done so. Follow the installation instructions that came with the program.

3. Start the digital television capture program. The program interface will show the television signals received through the capture card. Some capture cards have several types of input connection, so you may have to select the input connector that your source cable is connected to, to see the television broadcast in the program interface window. The program instructions will explain select the correct input connection, if required.

4. Click the button in the program interface that will begin capturing the digital television broadcast received by the capture card. This will save the digital broadcast data to a digital file, on your computer's hard drive. Stop the capture once the broadcast you want to save has ended. The program instructions will indicate which buttons to click to start and stop the capture. You can select a location on the computer's hard drive where your captured digital television video files are saved.

5. Install and open a DVD burning program. Place a blank DVD in your computer's DVD recorder. Locate the saved digital television broadcast file, and drag it into the DVD burning program interface. Select your DVD recorder in the DVD buring program interface. Click the button in the DVD burning program interface that will begin buring the file to DVD. The program's instructions will identify this button. Once the burning process is completed, you can play the DVD.

Save Photos Onto A Dvd From A Dell Computer

Dell and Windows 7 lets you archive your photos quickly.

One of the benefits of digital photography is the ease with which photos can be stored on computers and digital media. Gone are the days of shoeboxes filled with photos piling up in the garage. Now it's simply a matter of filling up discs when computer space runs out. Saving photos onto a DVD, which provides much more storage capacity than a CD, is a simple process.

Instructions

1. Insert a blank DVD into your optical drive. When the "Auto Play" window opens select "Burn files to disc using Windows Explorer."

2. Note the "Burn a disc window" that opens. Title your disc in the field indicated under "How do you want to use this disc?" Select the radial button next to "With a CD/DVD player" then click "Next."

3. Select the photos on your Dell computer that you wish to copy onto the DVD by clicking on each photo, then dragging it to the "Files ready to be written to the disc" pane. Repeat this process until you have moved all the photos you wish to copy.

4. When the "Burn to disc window" opens, click "Next." Note the progress bar, and wait until "Performing final steps to finish this disc" is complete.

5. Click on "Finish" when the "You have successfully burned your files to the disc" appears. Retrieve your ejected disc.

6. Create another disc using the same files by clicking on the check box next to "Yes, burn these files to another disc."
